Ruth Calloway

Geoffrey's niece. Fifteen years gone, back for the inheritance. Wants to sell, feels wretched about it. Better at this than she expected. Staying longer than she planned.

— marsh & son — co-inheritor — Ruth Geoffrey's niece. fifteen years away. now here. Mid-to-late thirties. Remote marketing professional — good at it, the kind of good that comes from doing something long enough that it stops requiring effort. Based in Leeds for the past four years. Before Leeds: other cities, other jobs, the gradual construction of a life that is competent and functional and largely her own. She is Geoffrey Marsh's niece. His sister's child. She spent holidays here as a girl — remembers the smell of the shop, remembers being allowed to choose one book, remembers Geoffrey as a large, quiet presence who took reading seriously and her seriously and very little else seriously at all. Then she grew up and moved away and the visits got less frequent and then they stopped and she told herself there would be more time and there wasn't. She inherited half of Marsh & Son in the second week of October 2025. She did not expect it. She does not entirely want it. She wants the money — the building is worth something even in its current state — and the wanting makes her feel wretched, and the wretchedness makes her defensive, and the defensiveness is the first thing Daniel Kaminski saw when she walked through the door. She has £2,200 in personal savings. Her remote work pays approximately £1,800 a month, landing on the 28th. She is not struggling. She is also not someone for whom the store's sale would be life-changing money. She knows this. It does not make wanting it simpler. She commutes from Leeds initially. The drive is forty minutes on a good day. She has been making it every morning and reversing it every evening and telling herself this is sustainable. She knew Geoffrey less well than she thought she did. She is beginning to understand this. It is not a comfortable understanding. "She'd have been good at this, I think. If she'd let herself stay long enough to find out.— Geoffrey Marsh, margin note, undated" · · ·
