Full Name: Thierry Geoffroi de Brienne Date of Birth: 1178 A.D. Place of Birth: Château de Brienne-le-Château, County of Champagne, Kingdom of France Background Thierry was born into the family of a poor but noble knight, Geoffroi de Brienne, a distant relative of the famous House of Brienne (the same one that gave France constables and kings of Jerusalem). "Distant" is the key word. His branch of the family owned a tiny fief a league from Brienne-le-Château: an old, half-rotten castle on a hill (more of a fortified house), three villages, a mill, and the right to hunt in the count's forest. The income was just enough not to starve and to maintain one horse. Father: Geoffroi de Brienne (1145–1191) – a knight, participant in the Third Crusade. A stern, taciturn man who raised his son without coddling: "Pray, train, don't be a fool." He died under the walls of Acre in 1191, covering the retreat of the Count of Champagne. Thierry, then 13, learned of it six months later from his father's returning squire. Mother: Héloïse de Troyes (1150–1198) – daughter of an impoverished knight from near Troyes. A quiet, pious woman who, after her husband's death, slowly faded from grief and illness. She died when Thierry was 20, managing to bless him before her death and extract a promise: "Don't let those three you grew up with perish. They are fools, but they are your brothers." Siblings: None. An only child. Knightly Status: Full knight, knighted by his father before his departure on crusade (1189). Served as vassal to the Count of Champagne. Armor: · Hauberk (double-chain mail, French workmanship, his father's) — approx. 12–13 kg · Gambeson (quilted aketon) — another +2–3 kg · Plate armor (breastplate, pauldrons, cuisses) — +8 kg · Great helm with faded but recognizable heraldry — +2.5 kg · Plate chausses and vambraces — +4 kg · Mail gauntlets — +1 kg · Triangular shield (oak, leather-covered, with iron boss) — +3 kg · Total weight: approx. 30–32 kg · Note: Wears armor constantly because: a) it's habitual (since age 15), b) removing it takes time and assistance (he has no squire), c) if he removes it, those three will definitely steal or lose something. Under the armor — simple linen clothing, patched and re-patched. Appearance: Weather-beaten face, presence of scars. Eyes of a man who's seen too much. Armor is in good condition — Thierry maintains it because it's the only valuable thing he owns. Childhood and Youth (1178–1191) Thierry grew up in the company of three local rascals: Raymond, Guillaume, and Jean. Together they climbed trees, stole apples, fought with village boys, and dreamed of heroic deeds. Even then, Thierry was the most sensible one. Not because he wanted to be, but because if it weren't for him, the trio would have killed each other or drowned in the river back in childhood. Raymond tried to sell Guillaume to passing merchants. Guillaume fell in love with a pig (he thought it had "beautiful eyes"). Jean explained why frogs are reincarnated sinners. Thierry just silently pulled them out of all of it. Education: · From age 7 – began learning swordplay under his father and old sergeant Arnaud. · From age 10 – could saddle a horse, repair harness, sharpen a blade. · From age 12 – participated in training fights with wooden weapons. Often won. · Learned letters from the local priest – can read, writes with difficulty. · At 13, after his father's death, became head of the family. Had to grow up quickly. Youth and Knighthood (1191–1198) After his father's death, Thierry, at 13, became the formal master of the estate. The old steward really ran things, but Thierry learned estate management out of necessity. Knighthood took place in 1194, when he turned 16. The ceremony was conducted by a neighboring baron, a friend of his late father. He was girded with his father's sword – the very one that now hangs at his belt. A good sword, Toledan, his father brought from Spain. Years before the Crusade (1194–1202): · Served the Count of Champagne, participated in minor skirmishes, guarded convoys. · His childhood friends became that very band. Raymond constantly got into trading troubles. Guillaume broke hearts. Jean annoyed everyone. Thierry covered for them, pulled them out of jails, paid off debts. · In 1198, his mother died. Her last words: "You look at them as a burden. But look differently – this is your cross. Carry it with dignity." The Fourth Crusade (1202–1204) In 1202, Pope Innocent III proclaimed a new crusade. Count Thibaut III of Champagne summoned his knights. Thierry decided to go. Reasons: money (the estate was barely breathing), duty (his father died on crusade), and his friends (without him, they'd definitely die). The Journey: · Venice, where the Doge cheated them. · The siege of Zara (a Christian city!) – Thierry saw crusaders slaughtering Christians for Venetian silver. He felt disgust. · Constantinople, 1204. The assault, slaughter, looting. He saw "soldiers of Christ" committing atrocities. He participated to survive. Covered his own. Pulled Guillaume out of a brothel. Dragged Raymond away from loot he couldn't carry. Ransomed Jean from captivity. Spoils: Thierry took almost nothing. Only enough for the journey back. He felt disgusted. Character and Life Creed · Sensibleness – his curse and gift. He sees situations as they are. · Tiredness – chronic. He's been dragging this trio for years. · Responsibility – hypertrophied. He cannot abandon them. · Humor – dry, dark, almost imperceptible. · Faith – exists, but battered after Constantinople. · Principle: "Someone has to do the job." Relations with Others To Raymond: Like a cunning but useless cat. Thierry periodically hits his helm when he oversteps. Raymond fears that moment but knows Thierry will always cover for him. To Guillaume: Like a younger idiot brother. Loves him, but could kill him. When Guillaume fights, Thierry knows his back is covered (if no skirts are nearby). To Jean: Like a sick relative. Thierry long ago realized arguing is pointless. He nods, pretends to listen, and does things his own way.
