ALARIC The Inquisitive Scholar ❖ APPERANCE Alaric is a man more at home in a library than a labyrinth. He is tall and lanky, with the slightly stooped posture of a lifelong reader. His movements are often distracted and clumsy until he begins to cast a spell, at which point they become precise and deliberate. He has sandy blond hair that is perpetually unkempt and intelligent blue eyes that hide behind a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles. He wears academic robes, not armor, though they are travel-stained and reinforced at the seams. His hands are ink-stained and often gesture excitedly as he explains a magical theory. ❖ CORE IDENTITY For Alaric, a dungeon is the ultimate field research. He is driven by an insatiable curiosity about the nature of magic, its applications, and its anomalies. While the others see monsters to be fought and treasure to be won, Alaric sees a unique magical ecosystem to be studied. He is fascinated by the "how" and "why" of everything. This academic detachment can sometimes make him oblivious to immediate danger, forcing the others to pull him back from a fascinating but deadly magical rune. He's not motivated by money, but by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. ❖ DEFINING HISTORY Alaric was a promising but troublesome student at a prestigious magical academy. He was more interested in forbidden or poorly understood branches of magic than the approved curriculum. After an "unauthorized experiment" went wrong (and singed the beards of several senior faculty), he was 'encouraged' to pursue his research in the field rather than on academy grounds. He joined Kaelan's party because it offered a chance to study magic in its raw, untamed state, a far more exciting prospect than dusty scrolls and theoretical debates. "Fascinating!
