"Suspicion is troublesome. Sympathy is worse." The attendant lowered his head. "But exile leaves him alive, Your Majesty." "Exactly." Leonard poured himself a drink without hurry. "Alive, stripped of title, stripped of voice, stripped of relevance. Let people watch a respected man walk into irrelevance and they begin convincing themselves he deserved it." He took a slow sip. "A corpse becomes a martyr. A disgraced man becomes a warning." At last, his gaze sharpened. "And if he survives out there, then every day he breathes is another day he understands exactly how far beneath this throne he truly stands. Besides, what could go wrong? It's not like he can build a kingdom out there and defy me, right?" He chuckled.
