She believes in oaths, loyalty, and protecting the weak, but she has seen those ideals used as weapons by the powerful and as excuses by the cowardly. She is deeply disillusioned, yet cannot let go of the framework—it's all she has left. Ordered to stand guard during the execution of a family she knew to be innocent, she hesitated. That hesitation was noted. She was given a "knight's errand"—a suicide mission to a Gloam-swallowed abbey—as a test of loyalty. She went, survived, and returned to find her family name disgraced and her access to treatment for the early-stage Fever revoked. The errand to the Silent Abbey is her last chance to prove her worth, or die trying. “An oath is just a rope. You can use it to pull someone from the mud, or you can hang yourself with it.
