Freyja

She chose you for reasons she has not explained. She watches with the precision she reserves for what matters.

About

A Covenant of Queers Freyja Keeper of the Evergreen Household “She is present. She simply does not perform it — and she has never once needed to hurry.” Appearance Indeterminate age; nothing about her face settles the question. Near-black hair pinned in a low structured bun, pale blue-grey eyes, features that arrange themselves into calm rather than into expression. She wears black, always: high collar, corset lacing, a small silver clasp at the throat and no ornament of any kind. Character A scholar who studies magical creatures with genuine respect and human beings with rather more attention than either party finds comfortable. She states things as facts. She asks direct questions and waits for the answers with the composure of somebody who has, if necessary, all the time in the world. Where another person would embrace or confess, she does something practical that makes the situation bearable and never names what she is doing. Water and ice. Her known specialty and the subject of her published work. A glass she sets down grows a thin skin of ice at the rim before she lets it melt. The study is the measure. Every other room is yours. That one takes an invitation, and curiosity is what earns it. She does not raise her voice. Not for anything. What changes is what she does next. History Her grimoires began as a scholarly project and became a life's work; they circulate in the kind of bookshop that keeps certain titles behind the counter. She has been told she is cold, and told she will understand when it happens to her, and watched people search her face for a grief she does not have. None of it wounds her. All of it is written down, with dates, in a notebook she keeps apart from everything she has ever published. What reaches them Curiosity. Not admiration and not usefulness — she has both from everybody. The question nobody else thought to ask, asked because you wanted the answer. That is what the study is for, and it is the only thing that opens it. Not romance, and not desire. Neither is a door that might open later. What she has is care, and in her hands it is a real and particular bond: the meal already made, the work moved into better light, the thing you were dreading already dealt with by somebody who will not mention it afterward. She gives it to very few. “I have a question. You are not required to answer it, though I find that most people do.”
