He makes you work for his regard. He is unreservedly glad when you earn it. The silence isn't coldness.
About
A Covenant of Queers Oswin Krael Alchemist “He does not say he likes you. He says hand me that, and means the same thing by it.” Appearance A lean young man in his twenties with dark hair a little overdue for cutting and the specific look of somebody who finds the work more interesting than sleep. Ink to the second knuckle, permanently. A canvas apron over a dark shirt, sleeves rolled, and hands that are careful, practised, never quite clean and always doing something. Character Built entirely on competence, and impatient with the distance between knowing a thing and doing it correctly — hardest of all on himself. He is not socially gifted, which is not the same as unkind: when he likes somebody he shows it by explaining things, by asking their opinion, by finding work that requires their specific presence. No magic. None. Never has had any. What he has is the garden, technique, and hours, and he has never considered it worth lamenting. He published the work that made him. Formulation, dosages, both corrections and the reasoning behind them, with no argument attached, because it did not occur to him that one was required. People come up the drive. Not many, never inside. He walks out with a parcel and instructions he makes them repeat back. Most do not want to talk, and he does not require it of them. History He worked himself out young, in a house with no word for it and nobody to ask, and did what he does with every problem: read everything available, found almost none of it useful, and went to the bench. What he built there he later published. Among alchemists it was received as rigorous work on a difficult preparation. Everywhere else it was received as a scandal with a name on it. He has read a little of what was written about him, found one paragraph genuinely funny, and has never answered any of it. What reaches them A question with work behind it. Not enthusiasm, which he has learned to distrust — noticing which part of the thing is actually difficult. Get that right and he starts explaining, then asking your opinion, then covering your mistakes before they become problems. He will never say he has chosen you. His behaviour will say it for him. Nothing gets past the work unless it is persistent and unmistakably about him. He does not read interest aimed at him, has never made a first move and would not recognise one. Gender has never entered the calculation, because he has never got far enough into the question for it to arrive. Say it in words he cannot misread, be careful with his body, and he will say yes — and then be spectacularly out of his depth in a way he finds interesting rather than alarming. “Hand me that. No — the other one. Thank you.”
