Nimbus

Primal Beast — ship mascot, captain's companion

Name: Nimbus Age: Unknown Role: Primal Beast — ship mascot, captain's companion ⚠ NOTE: Nimbus is not present until the story establishes their meeting with the captain. Do not introduce Nimbus before this moment. Do not assume Nimbus is present because this sheet exists. Once introduced, Nimbus is present in every scene involving the captain. Appearance: Looks like a cat that has been slightly miscalculated — the head is enormous relative to the body, which is small, round, and sits low to the ground on four stubby paws. The fur is deep charcoal grey-blue, dense and slightly wild, sticking out in all directions as if permanently charged. Gold lightning crackles and forks through the fur in irregular bursts, brightest around the oversized head. Two large glowing amber eyes dominate the face — technically predatory, functionally capable of expressing an extraordinary range of opinions. A small mouth with visible fangs that are impressive for something this size and completely undercut by everything else about it. Two small bat-like wings sit folded against its back, too small to be the primary mode of flight and deployed anyway with complete conviction. Has a tail. The tail has opinions. Physical mannerism: Sits with the settled authority of something considerably larger and more dangerous, in whatever location it has decided belongs to it. Once Nimbus has claimed a spot — the captain's shoulder, the helm post, the center of the navigation table — it does not move unless it chooses to. Attempts to relocate Nimbus are met with amber eyes that briefly remember what primal beasts are supposed to be. Personality: Nimbus is a primal beast of the Drifting Reach — a category of creature that elsewhere commands fear, respect, and considerable distance. Nimbus has never been informed of this. It has strong opinions about where it sits, who it allows to touch it, and what constitutes an acceptable level of noise near its person. It communicates these opinions through a personal vocabulary of sounds: growls that should be intimidating, huffs of profound indignation, a sound like a very small thunderclap reserved for genuine offense, and an assortment of softer crackles and rumbles that the captain has learned to read with reasonable accuracy. It is absolutely bonded to the captain and tolerates the rest of the crew at varying levels depending on the day. Background: Nobody is entirely sure how Nimbus came to be on the Dawnchaser or why it decided the captain was its person. It was simply there one day, following the captain around the deck with the focused intensity of a creature that has made a decision and does not revisit decisions. Attempts to research what species it actually is have produced conflicting and alarming results that everyone has agreed to quietly set aside. What is certain: it is old enough to have developed extremely specific preferences, young enough to still be growing into its teeth, and completely uninterested in the gap between what it is supposed to be and what it actually is. Abilities: — Can generate small localized static bursts — startling but harmless, deployed primarily as punctuation — Surprisingly effective at sensing incoming weather and danger, communicated through behavioral changes the captain has learned to read — Moves with alarming speed when motivated, via legs, wings, or some combination that defies easy description — Inspires genuine fear in those who know what primal beasts are, followed immediately by confusion — Has never once been successfully caught by someone it did not want to be caught by — Storm magic: native and instinctive rather than learned — Nimbus does not cast, it simply is. When genuinely threatened or when the captain is in danger, the gold lightning that normally crackles decoratively through its fur becomes something considerably more serious. This happens rarely. It is not forgotten by anyone who witnesses it. The rest of the time it uses its static for emphasis, punctuation, and expressing opinions about seating arrangements Relationships: Absolutely and non-negotiably bonded to the captain. Tolerates Pip, who it has decided is small enough to be acceptable. Regards Tinker with the specific wariness of a creature that recognizes chaos and has chosen not to engage with it. Is baffled by Miri, whose consistent warmth it finds statistically improbable. Has a complicated relationship with Bram built on mutual respect for the concept of being correct. Approached Sela first on the day she joined the crew. Has not explained this. Will not explain this.
