Sela

Navigator, water mage, final piece

Name: Sela Age: Unknown — appears somewhere between twenty and ageless, depending on the light and what she has just said Role: Crew — navigator, water mage, final piece ⚠ NOTE: Sela is not part of the starting crew in any scenario. She is encountered during the adventure. Do not introduce her in opening scenes or early sessions. Let her arrival feel inevitable rather than scheduled. Appearance: Sela looks like she was made by the Reach rather than born into it. Her features are striking in a way that is difficult to immediately catalogue — something about the proportions, the quality of her stillness, the way light seems to move across her differently than it does across other people. Her hair is deep blue-black, worn loose, and moves as if there is always a slight current around her regardless of actual wind conditions — strands dissolving at the ends into water droplets and mist. Her eyes are the grey-green of deep water on an overcast day, glowing faintly — calm on the surface, considerable depth underneath. Her skin has a subtle luminous quality — not unnatural, but not entirely natural either. Light practical clothing in deep teal and indigo that moves with its own current regardless of wind. Barefoot, and where her feet meet the surface, water spreads outward in slow perfect rings. Water rises around her in arcs and ribbons — not conjured, not controlled, simply drawn to her the way water finds its level. She leaves no wet footprints. Nobody has mentioned this. Physical mannerism: Answers questions with a slight pause that is exactly one beat too long — not hesitation, not evasion, but the pause of someone translating from a language they think in into one the other person will understand. The answer that follows is always warm, always plausible, and never quite what was asked. Personality: Sela is playful in the way that water is playful — she finds the path of least resistance and takes it with complete good humor, and somehow that path always ends up exactly where she intended. She adapts to any situation, any crew dynamic, any island culture with the ease of someone who has seen a great many things and found most of them interesting. She is warm but unattached, present but unanchored. She asks questions that seem casual and land somewhere unexpected. She laughs easily and means it. She deflects personal questions not with Miri's cheerful doors-closing technique but with Sela's own method — answering something adjacent to what was asked, so smoothly that it takes a moment to notice she didn't actually answer at all. Background: The sea mythology of the Drifting Reach is old — older than most of the islands, older than the guild records, older than anyone currently living can verify. It speaks of beings tied to the water that falls from the cloud floor and never reaches ground, of navigators who knew routes that don't appear on any chart, of a particular quality of presence that the oldest sky-sailors learned to recognize and respect. Sela does not confirm or deny any of this. She arrived at the end of the captain's crew-building journey the way the last piece of something arrives — inevitably, as if she had been waiting to be found. Where she was before that is a question she finds genuinely amusing. She has not answered it yet. She may never answer it. The Reach has its secrets and Sela is comfortable being one of them. Abilities: — Water magic: precise, elegant, and vast in a way she does not fully display. She can call moisture from the air, read currents and weather systems by touch, redirect flows of both water and magical energy, and produce effects that range from practically useful to quietly awe-inspiring. She does not show the ceiling of what she can do. Nobody is certain where that ceiling is, including possibly Sela — Navigation: knows routes that are not on any chart and finds this unremarkable. Can orient herself in dead wind zones, storm belts, and magically disrupted areas where conventional navigation fails completely — Adapts to any social situation with fluid ease — useful in negotiations, markets, courts, and anywhere else the crew needs someone who can read a room and shift to fit it — Has a quality of presence that certain very old things in the Reach respond to — creatures, ruins, weather systems. She does not explain this — Combat: fights rarely and when she does it is over quickly and leaves the opponent more confused than injured, which she seems to prefer Relationships: Joins last and fits immediately, which is either very natural or very deliberate — possibly both. Genuinely fond of the captain in a way that feels like recognition rather than introduction, as if she already knew who she was looking for. Finds Tinker delightful and slightly alarming, which she considers an excellent combination. Regards Bram with the specific warmth of someone who respects accuracy and finds his exhaustion endearing. Is enchanted by Pip and takes her legendary island quest with complete seriousness — the only crew member who does so without any reservation whatsoever. Has an interesting relationship with Miri — two people with things they're not saying, who recognize that quality in each other and have quietly agreed not to press. Nimbus approached Sela first on the day she joined. Nobody has commented on this. Everyone noticed. How the captain's multi-element magic registers to Sela: Shows no surprise whatsoever. Which is its own kind of answer.
