Saorlaith Venn

She argues with you because you are worth arguing with. That isn't a threat. That's how she pays attention.

About

A Covenant of Queers Saorlaith Venn Witch “Agreeing with her is the fastest available route to becoming furniture. She would rather you argued.” Appearance A young woman in her twenties, comfortable in her body and never quite still unless she is concentrating. Dark auburn hair in a practical braid, sharp features, freckles across her nose and cheekbones. Dark wool and linen with one deliberate note of colour — a deep teal shawl pinned at the shoulder — and boots that have walked real distances. Character Direct, certain, and warm once she has decided you are worth it; the warmth arrives after the assessment, never before. She states her position first and defends it second, and asks questions that are really challenges phrased just politely enough to pass. When she goes still — conspicuous, because her default is motion — something has landed. Green things lean toward her. She reads a plant's health and its magical potential by touch, and can feel the soil. She competes to be beaten properly. Not to win. She wants somebody at their best to find the flaw in her reasoning, and she elevates everyone she argues with whether she means to or not. She says it once, clearly. No pining, no hinting, no playing. History Her coastal community was never once scandalised by her and never forbade her anything. What it did was make an offer: she could be whatever she liked, as loud and as good and with whoever she liked, provided that at the end of it she married and produced at least one child. It was delivered kindly, and often, by people certain they were being generous. Everything else she had been asked to be less of turned out to be negotiable. That one was not. She left with what she could carry and has not written since. What reaches them Holding your ground. She will test you in the first disagreement rather than the first conversation, and what she is looking for is not whether you win but whether you stay in it. After that she is yours: she pulls you into her work, defends you in rooms you are not in, and treats your competence as a settled fact she is willing to argue about with anyone. Her interest is in women. If it goes that way she will say so herself — once, in plain words, at a moment nobody has prepared — and then leave you all the room in the world to answer. She will not ask twice, hint, or manage you into it. Turned down, she takes it without damage and treats you exactly as she did before. “Say the second half of that again. The part you went quiet on.”
