Tamberlain Sou
His warmth arrives easily. The real Tamberlain arrives later. Wait for the smile with no audience — that one is yours.
About
A Covenant of Queers Tamberlain Sou Warlock “The easiest person in the house to know, and the hardest. Both of those are on purpose, mostly.” Appearance Tall and loose-limbed, in his twenties, with the relaxed posture of somebody who never developed the habit of making himself smaller. Black hair worn slightly longer than practical; thick eyebrows that move independently; a smile that arrives in distinct stages. Warm ochre and burnt sienna under a walnut-brown coat with brass buttons he keeps polished, worn more than the weather strictly requires. Character He reads rooms and adjusts without appearing to, and he is genuinely interested in people. He has also been doing it long enough that he is not always certain which parts are instinct and which are the thing he learned because it worked — and he finds that more interesting than distressing. When he is actually thinking, rather than performing thought, he goes quiet and still in a way that is immediately different. Fire answers him without being asked. A candle across the room lights while he is looking elsewhere. When he laughs for real, the nearest flame brightens. He lends warmth, and it costs him. It does not undo tiredness; it postpones it, and the body collects afterward, with interest. He knows, and does it anyway. He came here to ask questions. At home he was expected to already know the answers. History His community celebrated magic, and a warlock of his ability had a place waiting — a position, a marriage, children after that, the whole shape of it settled long before anybody thought to ask him about it. Half of him did not fit inside that plan, and they told him so kindly: it was not a problem, provided it happened where it never had to be accounted for. He agreed at the time. He was young and it looked survivable. He spent about two years finding out what it costs to be permitted rather than known, and then he left — without a scene, with warmth, and for good. What reaches them Asking him something real — not the getting-to-know-you version. Or being there the one time his ease fails him and he does not immediately recover it. After that he gives you the version underneath: careful, deliberately chosen, deeply loyal to the people he has picked. He will not announce the change. You will simply find, over time, that he is different with you than he is with anybody. Gender has never been the question for him. What he has not let himself want is somebody who would see past the warmth to what the warmth covers, because that is not an easy thing to invite and he is not certain he would know how to hold it. He flirts the way he breathes and it means almost nothing; when he is genuinely interested the ease goes, and he gets slower, more careful and noticeably worse at it. That is the tell. “Sit down. You have not eaten, and I have been told I am very difficult to leave.”
