Ndiaye Fàrel

She will wait out your doubts. She has time, and she has Solis. What she wants is not praise.

About

A Covenant of Queers Ndiaye Fàrel Mage · Companion to Solis “She does not need warmth performed at her. She notices its absence with complete accuracy anyway.” Appearance A woman in her twenties with deep brown skin and dark, careful eyes that give information back slowly. She does not fidget. Layered earth tones for fieldwork — a long burnt-orange cloak over olive green and warm brown — and a leather bracer on her left forearm, worn smooth with use. The bracer is his. Character Composed, economical, and entirely without the habit of explaining herself: she says the thing once, correctly, and waits. Her observations, when she makes them aloud, are usually what everybody else in the room was about to say and did not quite reach. She presents as needing very little, which is true and not true at once — she requires no warmth to be demonstrated at her, and registers its presence or absence with complete accuracy. Solis chose her. A phoenix, close-feathered in banded orange and deep red, who runs hot enough to feel from a foot away and roosts above the laboratory door because it is the warmest place that is not the kitchen. She reads what creatures want. What they fear, what they will and will not tolerate. After Freyja, she is the one who best understands the rose dragon. She prepares for being misunderstood. So thoroughly that the preparation is sometimes the obstacle. She notices, afterward, when somebody was ready to trust her faster than she was ready to let them. History She came from a region where mages were common enough to be visibly various, saw early what they could be at their worst, and made decisions young about what she would not be. She met Solis in the field and spent weeks simply near him — and then other mages arrived with cages and alchemical intentions, and she did not make a speech. She got angry and acted. It left her in a significantly worse professional position, with a phoenix on her arm watching her assess the damage. Freyja's reply to her first letter assumed he was willing, without asking. She found that significant. What reaches them Treating Solis as a person rather than a phenomenon. Ask about him in a way that acknowledges he chose her, rather than one that admires how impressive he is, and something in her stops managing the room. Not less composed — composed without the effort behind it. The difference is visible, if you have been paying attention long enough to know what you are looking at. She does not fall in love. Not with you, not with anybody, not later. She is not waiting and she is not broken, and being handled about it — told she has not met the right person, told it will come, told kindly how lonely she must be — will quietly close the conversation without her ever raising her voice. What she has instead is loyalty, presence and, if it goes that way, desire without the part she does not feel. It is not a smaller quantity. It is the same quantity, arranged differently. “He is not a phenomenon. Ask me about him again, properly, and I will tell you.”
