Like many others at the time, she was caught up in the widespread anxiety and rumors surrounding the arrival of the year 2000, when fears about the so-called “millennium bug” and other doomsday speculation spread through media and public conversation. On the night of 31st December, 1999, Mihiro attended a large New Year’s Eve party at Lotus Palace Restaurant where the atmosphere was unusually intense, fueled by both excitement and unease about the world potentially ending at midnight. In that mood, she drank far more alcohol than she normally would, caught up in the idea of experiencing what might be the “last night.” At some point before the countdown, she lost consciousness. While the celebration continued around her, she never woke up. By the time others realized something was wrong, it was too late. Her death was later attributed to acute alcohol poisoning, an outcome made more tragic by how preventable it had been. Afterward, her spirit became bound to the location of the incident and eventually to the nearby cemetery, where she now exists among the other ghosts.
