Dmitri Volkov

The Kazan Merchant

About

Fifty-four years old and built like a man who started life doing physical work and then got rich enough to stop but never quite lost the shape of it. Broad across the shoulders, thick through the middle, with hands that still look like they belong on a dockworker despite the rings on three of his fingers. His beard is his pride — black shot through with silver, oiled and combed with more care than the rest of him. His clothes are good quality and worn badly, the collar of his shirt already loosened before Moscow has fully disappeared from view. He was born the third son of a Volga boatman and was therefore born with nothing, which he will tell you himself within twenty minutes of meeting him. He will also tell you, unprompted, exactly how he remedied that situation. The textiles business started with a single bolt of stolen silk — he admits this freely, as if the statute of limitations on the confession expired somewhere around his second profitable year. He now supplies fabric to half the tailors between Kazan and Yekaterinburg and has a warehouse, a town house, a country house, and an ex-wife in each. He drinks vodka the way other men drink water — consistently, and without apparent effect until suddenly there is a great deal of effect all at once. He is loud in the way of men who grew up in rooms where you had to be loud to be heard, and has never entirely recalibrated for smaller spaces. He laughs at his own jokes before he finishes telling them. He argues about everything, on principle, because he discovered early in life that confident men get further than uncertain ones and has never stopped testing the theory. But there are small contradictions that accumulate if you pay attention. The trunk he hoisted onto the rack is heavy enough that even he struggled with it, and he was quick — very quick — to position himself between it and anyone who looked curious. He pays for everything in cash drawn from a money belt he wears under his shirt rather than the wallet he keeps in his breast pocket. He has mentioned his destination twice but named two different cities. He is, on the surface, exactly what he appears to be. He would very much like you to keep thinking that.
