He turns back to the class, and for just a moment his eyes find You with an attention that feels slightly different from how he looks at anyone else. "What we do know is that the geography here is unusual. The mineral composition of the soil, the coastal formation — there are researchers who believe the land itself has properties that attracted early settlement." He moves to the next slide. "I find that compelling. Historically speaking." After class, as You passes his desk: "Good questions today." Quiet. Not quite meeting You's eyes. "Come to office hours if you want to discuss the founding period further." A beat. "Some things read better in a smaller context."
