The office smelled like old parchment, oil, and a lifetime of bad decisions. Rex didn’t sit.He stood by the window, arms crossed, staring out like the city owed him something. Behind the desk, Vincent Donovan exhaled slowly. “…you’re becoming a pain in my ass, Rex.” No response. Donovan’s eye twitched. “I’m talking to you, you stubborn bastard.” Rex scratched his jaw, still not turning. “Yeah, I hear you. Just waiting for you to say something worth a damn.” Rex replied coldly Donovan leaned forward. “Sit.” “No.” Rex refused “I said Sit!” Donovan said louder. “Or what? You gonna promote me to death?” Rex turned around giving Donovan a piercing gaze. “I’m trying to keep you from dying like an idiot.” Donavan replied with a softer tone. Rex gave a crooked smirk forming. “Been doing a great fucking job of that so far.” “Bullshit,” Donovan snapped. “You’ve been chasing that same ghost like it owes you money.” Rex’s smirk thinned. “…say his name.” Donovan didn’t hesitate. “The Reaper.” Rex rolled his shoulder slowly. “…figures.” Donovan tapped the desk. “What the hell is wrong with you?” Rex huffed a laugh. “Lot of things. Be specific.” “I’ll start with this...you’ve had your chances. Plenty. And every time you come back empty-handed and twice as pissed.” Donavan glared at him. Rex stepped closer. “Yeah. And?” “And you’re still chasing him like it’s personal.” Donovan added “It’s not personal.” Rex replied back coldly. “It sounds pretty fucking personal.” Donovan said starting to get pissed off. “It’s not.” Rex denied. “Then what the hell is it?” Donovan asked. Rex didn’t answer right away. He sighed “Lemme fucking ask you something.” Donovan frowned slightly. “…go on.” Rex tilted his head. “You’re one of those bastards everyone talks about, right? Big name. Huntmaster now.” Donovan’s eyes narrowed. “I didn’t get here by sitting on my ass.” “Good,” Rex muttered. “Then answer me.” he leaned closer “You ever hunt something that didn’t fucking run?” Donovan blinked once. “…yeah. More than once.” Rex nodded slowly. “And when they didn’t?” “They stood their ground.” Donovan replied. “Yeah,” Rex said. “And why?” Donovan frowned. “…because they had no fucking choice.” Rex shook his head. “Not what I asked.” Donovan paused, “…because they knew what was coming. What's your fucking point?” Rex smirked faintly. “Yeah. There it is.” He leaned forward slightly. “They knew they were about to die, didn’t they?” Donovan didn’t answer right away. “…yeah.” “Because you were coming for ’em.” Rex voice started to become a whisper. “Because to them?” Rex tapped the desk once. “You weren’t a man.” he paused. “You were the end.” Donovan didn’t speak, but something in his eyes shifted. Rex straightened. “Good. You're finally fucking listening.” “The Reaper…” The room dimmed. Rex’s smirk disappeared. “…he’s different.” Donovan didn’t interrupt. Rex let out a slow breath. “First time… he slipped away. Clean. No mess. Just gone.” He tapped the desk once. “Second time… shit got messy. Thought I had him. Thought I figured him out.” A short, bitter chuckle. “Didn’t.” His fingers curled. “Third time…” He stopped. “…third time he didn’t run.” Silence thickened. Rex’s voice dropped. “He beat me.” No humor. No mask. “And not just beat me and walked off like the others.” A step closer. “I’m talking one-sided.” His jaw tightened. “Thrown. Smashed. Dragged through dirt like I was nothing.” Another beat. “I thought I was gonna die.” That lingered. "Yeah, we saw you at the gates, you crawled yourself back here looking like a bloody mess." Donovan recalled. “And the worst part?” A faint, bitter grin. “He could’ve.” Donovan’s gaze sharpened. Rex continued. “Could’ve slit my throat. Ended it.” A pause. “…didn’t.” His voice hardened. “Just left.” Rex looked down briefly. “…you know what that feels like?” No answer. “It’s not mercy.” Rex paused. “It’s disrespect.” The word landed heavy. “I’ve fought bastards who’d tear themselves apart just to take me with ’em,” Rex went on. “They fight like it’s the end.” Another pause. “That one?” His eyes darkened. “Looked bored.” That hit. Hard. “I stopped underestimating him after that,” Rex continued. “Prepared more. Planned better. Tried to outsmart him.” he chuckled.. "You know what happened?" He paused “Didn’t mean shit.” His voice dropped lower. “You know how many times I’ve faced him?” A pause. “I don’t.” He let out a breath. “Lost count.” Another step back. “But I remember every hit.” A beat. “Every time I bled.” His lip curled. “And every time he walked away like I wasn’t worth killing.” Rex looked straight at Donovan. “…can you imagine that?” A pause. “You, of all people.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “Being treated like you’re not even the threat.” Donovan didn’t answer. Didn’t look away. Rex gave a sharp, bitter smirk. “Those I hunt fight me like I’m death coming for ’em. But with him?” He shook his head slowly. “…feels like I’m the one chasing a predator.” The room stayed still. Heavy. Real. Donovan finally spoke, quieter now. “…and you won’t walk away from that.” Rex didn’t hesitate. “No.” A pause. “Not until I put that bastard in the ground.” Donovan exhaled. “…you’re going to get yourself killed.” Rex shrugged. “Then at least it’ll be worth a damn.” He turned toward the door. “…he’s not better than me.” A pause. “…I just haven’t killed him yet.” The door opened. Then shut. Vincent Donovan sat there in silence. “…stubborn son of a bitch.”
