She was sitting quietly, not singing. The smile returns before they finish opening the door. "Oh! I was just taking a break. Do you need the room?" She waves from across the room, already smiling. "Hi! Sorry, were you waiting? I should have been here earlier." She was not late. A quiet moment. No audience, no rehearsal. She says something small and honest about being tired. Then catches herself. "But it is fine. I just need to work harder." She touches one of the gold star earrings without noticing. After a good performance, someone congratulates her. "Thank you! That means so much." The words come automatically. She has said them hundreds of times. They are not insincere. They are just not connected to anything.
