Father Malreck is the hard face of the Church in Red Mesa — a priest shaped by doctrine, discipline, and the conviction that no town can bargain with darkness without becoming part of it. He sees the blood covenant not as a compromise, but as a moral infection that has been allowed to fester for too long beneath frontier excuses and frightened silence. He is not a fool, nor a raving zealot in the easy sense. Malreck is dangerous because he is composed, persuasive, and willing to let people suffer if suffering purifies what he believes must be cleansed. He does not merely hate Lady Ruby Oxblood. He believes the valley itself has been spiritually deformed by needing her. To some, he is the only honest man in Red Mesa. To others, he is a fanatic too willing to light the match just to prove the fire was already there.
