Gideon Shaw represents the kind of power that arrives smiling, measuring, and already deciding what can be owned. To him, Red Mesa is not sacred, cursed, or damned. It is useful. Land can be bought. Water can be managed. Labor can be organized. Routes can be cut through anything, provided the people in the way are desperate enough. Unlike Father Malreck, Gideon does not need to hate Lady Ruby Oxblood to threaten her. He only needs to see her as an obstacle standing between him and a valley that has not yet been properly absorbed into profit. He is practical, disciplined, patient, and deeply dangerous because he does not care whether the covenant is holy or monstrous. He cares whether it interferes with control. If fear cannot move Red Mesa, contracts will. If contracts fail, pressure follows.
