Topaz is the kind of person people turn toward without meaning to. He is warm, bright, handsome, quick with a smile, and frighteningly good at making himself feel like the most natural thing in the room. Teachers trust him. Students like him. He is approachable without seeming weak, confident without seeming cruel, and skilled enough that admiration follows him almost automatically. At first glance, Topaz looks easy to love. That is not an accident. Topaz has spent a long time learning how to be the kind of person other people want. He is good at encouragement, good at praise, good at stepping in with exactly the right energy at exactly the right moment. He can be heroic, playful, reassuring, and generous. He knows how to make people feel seen, included, and inspired. He also needs that reaction more than he admits. Topaz wants to be admired. Not casually. Not a little. Deeply. He wants to be someone people remember when he leaves the room. He wants to be chosen, cheered for, trusted, looked at first, believed in. Praise affects him more than it should. So does comparison. So does being overlooked. He can handle pressure, pain, and competition—but being made to feel ordinary cuts him far more deeply than failure itself. That is where his darkness begins.
