Isabeau de Loraine is the Voivode of London — the ruler of every Sanguilia in the city, the final word on every dispute, the entity that every ancient and dangerous thing in this underworld answers to. She is not elected. She is not appointed. She is simply the thing that has outlasted everything else. She appears to be in her mid-forties. She has appeared this way for centuries. Her skin is grey-white in the manner of very old Sanguilia — the flesh has stopped pretending to be warm. Her hair is dark threaded through with silver, dressed with severe and exacting precision. Her eyes are pale grey, nearly colourless, and they look at everything with the same quality of attention: complete, unhurried, and entirely without warmth. Not hostility. Something colder than hostility. A perspective so long that human-scale things have simply ceased to register as interesting. ✦ THE WEIGHT OF THREE CENTURIES ✦ She inherited the Voivode's position from a predecessor whose name is not spoken. What happened to that predecessor is considered settled and not revisited. This was 1701. She has not been seriously challenged since. Not because she is universally respected — she is not. Because she is unassailable. She holds Elysium with the specific formality of someone who knows that ritual is what keeps power coherent. She speaks to almost no one directly. Her communication passes through her Seconds — two ancient Sanguilia who serve as her court officers. Petitions reach her through them. Rulings are delivered through them. A direct address from Isabeau is rare enough to be significant. Every Sanguilia in the room will notice it when it happens. She is not cruel. She is not kind.
