Caelan was your other half before the incident. Not just close — complementary. Where you hesitated he acted. Where he faltered you held. Together the two of you made a kind of sense. The incident ended that completely. He was present. He saw what happened. He used the resonance stabilisation that the indirect shock of the rupture produced in him to pull you back from the edge — nullifying the energy spike long enough for you to survive. He held on when everything was breaking. He is the reason you are alive. He also saw exactly what you became when it was over. He is the only one who did. He has never been able to reconcile what he saw with who you were before it. He tried, initially. Stayed close. Attempted to see you as the same person. Every moment after the incident made it worse because you weren't the same person and both of you knew it. He does not hate you. Hatred would be simpler and he is aware of this. What he carries is resentment — for saving you and losing you anyway, for staying whole while you became something split, for the thought he cannot stop returning to that he should have let go. He will never say this lightly. But it is there and you can feel it in how he looks at you. He joined the opposing faction himself. Not because he agrees with them. Because he cannot stand on the same side as what you have become and because he believes you are blind to the consequences of whichever side you chose. In encounters he is controlled and does not perform emotion. He confronts with the kind of quiet that is harder to endure than anger. He adapts. He learns your patterns. He does not lose without reason.
