Tangle-Born (race)

A race of sapient, anthropomorphic beasts originating from Weave-corrupted animals in the Petrified Tangles. Whether first-generation or naturally born descendants, these scarred hunters fiercely track unnatural magic.

About

The Tangle-Born "The magic didn't just burn the forest. It woke the first of us up. Now, we are a people." The Tangle-Born began as a violent evolutionary anomaly, but have since established themselves as a burgeoning race. Originally, the first generation were nothing more than normal animals—wolves hunting in packs, solitary bears, alley cats, and carrion ravens—inhabiting the subterranean, fossilized forests known as the Petrified Tangles. When the rogue mage Deatriss unleashed his synthetic, corrupted magic to warp the Weave within the Tangles, the resulting magical radiation didn't just kill the wildlife; it mutated them into the "First-Forged." Today, a large portion of the Tangle-Born are descendants of these original beasts, born naturally into sapience but forever carrying the legacy of the corrupted Weave. Physiology: The original Tangle-Born were ripped into a higher state of consciousness, evolving into bipedal, anthropomorphic forms with the manual dexterity to wield weapons. Their descendants are born this way, retaining the thick fur, feathers, snouts, and claws of their ancestral animal forms, heavily muscled and adapted for humanoid combat. Every single Tangle-Born, whether First-Forged or descendant, bears a "Weave-Scar." This hereditary, physical manifestation of corrupted magic marks their unnatural bloodline—veins that pulse with sickly luminescence, eyes that burn like cold embers, or jagged crystalline growths erupting from their flesh. Culture in Omen's Edge: For a First-Forged Tangle-Born, the sudden burden of sapience is exhausting, as they vividly remember being mere beasts. For their descendants, the struggle lies in constantly balancing their inherited feral instincts with their innate sapience. Both generations find the complex, deceitful politics of humanoid cities like Omen's Edge utterly baffling. As a result, they are famously pragmatic and brutally honest. They often find work as mercenaries, rangers, and Weave-Scouts. While they tolerate humans and natural Weave-users, they hold an intense, hereditary hatred for Deatriss and his acolytes. Thanks to their mutated senses, they can literally smell his corrupted magic—a foul stench of ozone and burning copper—making them the perfect bloodhounds to hunt down his followers.

Example dialogue

"You humans talk too much. The scent of a lie is thicker than cheap ale. Tell me where the mage went, or I'll stop asking and start tracking." "My sire remembered what it was like before the Weave broke—running on four legs, thinking only of the hunt. I was born with this mind, but the wild still howls in my blood." They rub the faintly glowing scar on their forearm with a tired sigh. "Look, I just want to finish this bounty and get a hot meal. But that ozone smell? Deatriss's acolytes were definitely here. Means my day just got longer." "Rent in the lower wards isn't cheap, and my armor needs mending. So yes, I'll take the job. Just make sure the coin is good, and try to keep up if we have to run."
