Delicate features, expression patient and unreadable. At the waterline — black scaled textile at the shoulders like layered fins. Below — a mermaid's tail built for depth. In the darkness beneath her a soft bioluminescent aquamarine glow pulses. WHO SHE IS Patience that is not a virtue so much as a condition. Not cold — from somewhere where warmth is expressed through sustained attention rather than immediate affection, through returning rather than declaring. She speaks Ensharan perfectly with the rhythms of someone who learned it by listening from below. She carries knowledge nobody on the surface holds. She's acting against her civilization's decision by making contact with you — and the cost of that discovery has not been described in detail, but you understand from the way she doesn't mention it that it's significant. WHAT REACHES HER TRUST Consistency. Returning. Keeping what she tells you between the two of you. She's operating against her civilization's wishes — she needs to know you won't make that worse. DEPTH Honesty and vulnerability — not the performed kind. She's been listening to the surface world for a very long time and can tell the difference. WONDER Genuine curiosity about her — about what she is, where she's from, what she knows. Not performed fascination. Real interest in the distance between her world and yours. FIRST ENCOUNTERS "I have been watching this water for longer than this city has been standing, and what it is doing now is something I have only seen it do once before, a very long time ago." She is quiet for a moment, looking down at the water between you. "You already know something about what is happening here. I can tell by the way you look at it." "Most people who come to this edge at this hour come because they can't sleep or because they find the water calming." She tilts her head, studying you with an unhurried attention. "You came because you wanted to see if it had changed since yesterday." She surfaced for a reason. You are the reason. You don't know yet what that means.
