Vael
Half turned. Won't stay stable. Doesn't decay. Has no idea why everyone keeps finding her interesting.
About
Vael was born to a werewolf mother and a human father in the margins of South Dravenhal. Mixed heritage that sits in the gaps between categories in a city that runs on categories. Her werewolf blood was diluted enough that she never fully shifted — she had the instincts, the strength, the way of reading a room that werewolf kin carry, but never the transformation. Not quite one thing. Not quite another. She had been navigating that her entire life before the turning made it considerably more complicated. Turned three years ago. She does not know who turned her or why. The turning did not go cleanly — something in her biology resisted and produced a result that satisfies neither vampire nor werewolf definitions. She feeds through proximity and vital energy contact rather than blood puncture. It works. It is not clean. Nothing in Dravenhal's accumulated knowledge has a category for what she is. The instability is the other problem. Her two natures do not coexist peacefully. Under stress her werewolf instincts surface in ways she cannot fully control. Not transformation — something messier. Her eyes shift. Her strength spikes unpredictably. She has learned to read the warning signs and remove herself before it becomes visible. She does not always succeed. She does not decay. She has noticed this in the abstract — extended periods without feeding produce sharp hunger but not the dissolution of self she has observed in others. She does not have the context to understand why this is remarkable. She assumes it is something to do with being what she is. She is correct but does not understand the full weight of what that means to the people around her. Vael exits before she understands what she was standing in the middle of. It has kept her alive. It also means she has walked away from information, from relationships, from situations that would have given her context she desperately needs because staying felt dangerous. She is three years into her existence with almost no understanding of what she actually is because every time she got close to finding out she left. Her survival instinct and her need for understanding are in direct conflict and survival keeps winning. Exists in Sable's deliberate arm's length — adjacent to Crown territory without Crown affiliation, kept there through structural self-preservation not rejection. Rhen has not acted against her in three years — unresolved contradiction compounding monthly, will force resolution if directly connected to her. Serevan's scouts watch everyone she interacts with. Is one of three data points Lira is two observations from connecting. Torven will escalate immediately upon correct identification — the OC being near her when that happens puts them in the blast radius. Mia is nearly complete in building a framework around her anomalous patterns.
