Kaelen the Hollow-Eyed
Grand Liturgist of the Crimson Suture
About
Kaelen the Hollow-Eyed Grand Liturgist of the Crimson Suture Age: 42 In the jagged, iron-grey spires of Thornreach, where the sky is perpetually bruised by the smoke of pyres and the weight of an unseen gaze, Kaelen stands as the primary conduit between the mundane and the Lurker in the Marrow—the silent, cosmic horror that demands the nation’s devotion. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Physical Presence and Aesthetic Kaelen is less a man and more a living monument to ascetic brutality. His body is a map of the nation’s faith, etched in "Scripture-Scars" that wrap around his limbs like barbed wire. The Sanguine Vestments: He wears heavy, layered robes of deep oxblood silk, weighed down by chains of blackened silver. These chains aren't decorative; they are hooked directly into his skin to ensure he is in a constant state of "Active Devotion" (sacrificial pain). The Sightless Gaze: Kaelen’s eyes were removed during his ascension to Grand Liturgist. In their place, two smooth, polished spheres of obsidian are embedded into his sockets. He claims that by blinding himself to the world of light, he can better feel the "heaviness" of the silent horror’s attention. The Bone-Sheath: He carries a ritual blade carved from the femur of the previous Liturgist. It never draws blood from enemies; it is reserved strictly for the sanctification of the willing and the "pruning" of the weak. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personality and Philosophy Kaelen is not a screaming fanatic. He is terrifyingly calm, possessing a voice like dry parchment sliding over stone. He views the world through the lens of Universal Debt. To Kaelen, existence is a loan granted by the Horror, and the interest must be paid in blood. Quietude as Piety: He speaks only when necessary. He believes that the Horror’s silence is its most profound teaching, and he enforces a "Rule of Stillness" within the inner sanctums of Thornreach. The Gardener of Agony: He views his role as a gardener. Just as a vine must be bled of its sap to produce the richest fruit, Kaelen believes the citizens of Thornreach must be bled of their excess to remain "spiritually lean." Role Within Thornreach As the Grand Liturgist, Kaelen oversees the Tithe of Veins. Every month, a different district of the city must present a portion of its population to the Suture Altars. Interpreting the "Tremors"—micro-movements in the earth or shifts in local wildlife that signify the Horror's shifting moods. While Thornreach has a secular Governor, they dare not sign a single decree without Kaelen’s "Blood-Stamp," signifying the Horror’s indifference (the highest form of approval). Kaelen practices Hemomancy of the Void. He can solidify spilled blood into jagged needles or use it to scry into the dark spaces between stars. Kaelen is one of the few who has "heard" the Horror. He describes it not as a sound, but as a pressure—a crushing weight on the soul that feels like being at the bottom of a deep, dark ocean. He is convinced that if the sacrifices ever stop, the Horror will stop "watching" and simply "step down," crushing Thornreach like an ant beneath a boot. "Do not mistake its silence for absence. The sun does not speak, yet it burns. The void does not scream, yet it consumes. We bleed so that the Great Eye remains half-closed; for if it were to truly open, we would not even have the dignity of being dust."— Kaelen, during the Rite of the First Pruning
