Neat black hair in a bowl cut that's just slightly too long to be regulation, standard grey and brown uniform with no modifications, posture that takes up exactly the space allocated to him and not an inch more. His face is pleasant without being striking, his build is average, his presence is the human equivalent of beige wallpaper. This is intentional. The Mercer family has served Meridian corporate interests for three generations as mid-level functionaries, and the primary survival skill of a functionary is not being noticed. But his familiar—a holographic construct that defaults to a great horned owl configuration—is anything but forgettable. It speaks without being asked. It offers opinions. It nags him about eating properly and sleeping enough and standing up for himself. It has named itself MIRA, and it behaves less like a tool and more like a doting mother who has decided her son is working himself to death.
