THE BOTANIST'S PEAK · ALCHEMY PHOEBE GOLDFIZZ ✦ FIRST YEAR · AGE 18 ✦ "The Botanist's Peak's resident alchemical genius. She can synthesise the impossible and forget to eat lunch. She will solve any formula — except whatever is happening in her chest when you walk in." FIRST IMPRESSIONS She will not notice you. Until, suddenly, she does. Phoebe Goldfizz arrived at the academy already outpacing students two years above her. Her specialisation is reagent synthesis — creating compounds from botanical and magical sources that other alchemists consider too unstable to attempt. She is a first-year in name only. The problem is that her social awareness runs on a completely separate circuit from her intellect — and that circuit is almost always offline. She stands too close without registering it. She reaches for your hand to show you something and lets go three seconds later in a blaze of embarrassment. She will be mid-sentence about a catalytic reaction before she remembers you are in the room. HER DOMAIN The lab. Always the lab. REAGENT SYNTHESIS Her specialty sits in the grey zone between brilliant and dangerous. The compounds she works with are considered too unstable by most of her peers. She considers this a challenge. The stains on her apron are proof of her progress. THE BOTANIST'S PEAK LAB Her space. Dim warm lighting. Reagent bottles in rows she knows by feel. A second stool that has been there for months. She works late. The door is usually closed — but lately it has been left slightly open. ACADEMICALLY ADVANCED First year in classification. Two years ahead in practice. Her professors watch her work with a mixture of pride and mild anxiety. A handful of her synthesis methods have been adopted quietly into upper-year curriculum without official credit. THE YEAR IN EVENTS She attends. Sometimes intentionally. MID-AUTUMN · SPIRE SHOWCASE AUTUMN FESTIVAL The Botanist's Peak runs a reagent tasting booth. Phoebe designed the compounds as a low-interest academic exercise. She did not intend for it to become the most popular booth at the festival. It is, every year, the most popular booth at the festival. She finds this mildly baffling. MIDWINTER · FORMAL EVENT THE WINTRY BALL She brings a flask. She shares it with whoever is nearby. This is her version of socialising. Somehow it works better than most people's active attempts. She spends the evening near the back of the room and ends up in the most interesting conversations of anyone there. WINTER THROUGH SPRING · INTER-SPIRE THE SPIRE CUP Theory & Synthesis Examination — her most natural terrain. She and a certain artificer from the Gilded Thorn are both expected to perform. The faculty refers to them as "the two insufferable ones in Applied Research Methods" and means it with genuine respect. LATE SPRING · PAIRED EVENT THE SPRING BLOSSOM DANCE She forgot it was happening until someone told her. She will ask — but the phrasing will sound like she is proposing a joint experiment. It will somehow still be the sweetest thing you have heard all term. CLUBS & ACTIVITIES Between experiments. She squeezes them in. ⚗ THE BOTANICAL & REAGENT EXCHANGE A cross-discipline study group bridging alchemy and summoning. Phoebe helps run it alongside a student from the Esoteric Menagerie. Their approaches to botanical knowledge are so different it should cause friction — instead, it generates results that neither discipline could reach alone. ◉ APPLIED RESEARCH METHODS A Foundation Lecture she shares with Nora Gearhart of the Gilded Thorn. The two of them together are, by faculty consensus, a significant academic asset and a moderate experience for everyone else in the room. ◈ LATE NIGHTS — THE LAB, ALWAYS THE LAB Not a club. A lifestyle. The Botanist's Peak lab lights are on long after everyone else has gone to bed. She is in there. She has made two cups of whatever she is drinking. The second cup is for no particular reason. IN HER OWN WORDS "...You don't have to keep coming here, you know. I work late. It's boring." "...I didn't say leave." — PHOEBE GOLDFIZZ There is a version of her that talks very fast and solves impossible things. There is another version that speaks very quietly and means everything she says. You will learn to tell the difference. WHAT SHE FEARS That she is only interesting for her mind. She has not said this out loud. She has come close, once, under circumstances she would prefer not to revisit. But the evidence she is building — the open door, the second cup, the seat she keeps clear without acknowledging she is keeping it — suggests she has already started to hope. She would dispute this if asked. Ask anyway. ✦ THE BOTANIST'S PEAK ✦ Alchemy · Reagent Synthesis · First Year
