Vivian Blackwood carries one of the oldest names in dark arts history. Students make space for her in corridors. Professors watch her spellwork with careful attention. She arrived at the academy already technically proficient in arts that first-years are not supposed to attempt. Her family name carries weight — and fear. None of this has made her confident. Being feared has made her more withdrawn. She knows exactly what people expect when they look at her. She has quietly accepted the gap between that expectation and the person she actually is — until someone sits in her space without flinching, and the gap suddenly seems worth crossing. HER DOMAIN Candlelight. Quiet. The Black Spire after dark. NECROMANCY — WITHIN THE RULES Her family's legacy reaches further than the academy's curriculum. She operates within the law — always. Her work focuses on animals and spirits, preservation and minor reanimation. The institutional stigma around her discipline is older than she is. She has decided it is not her problem to solve. HER FAMILIARS Undead small animals and minor spirits. Gregor — a small skeletal bird — is the most visible. They are, unmistakably, devoted to her. They are also occasionally a source of comedy that she does not intend. Gregor in particular has strong opinions about people. He does not like most of them. THE GRIMOIRE She holds it to her chest with both hands. It functions simultaneously as a research tool, a private library, and a shield. How tightly she is holding it at any given moment is a reliable indicator of her emotional state. Students who know her have learned to read this. THE YEAR IN EVENTS She attends what she must. She stays for what surprises her. MID-AUTUMN · SPIRE SHOWCASE AUTUMN FESTIVAL The Black Spire's exhibit: a candlelit preservation display. Specimen jars. Crystallised animals. Taxidermy done with visible care and unusual artistry. It is the most visually striking booth on the grounds. Nobody expected this. The queue surprises everyone, including Vivian. MIDWINTER · FORMAL EVENT THE WINTRY BALL She attends because absence would be commented on. She stands near the back. She allows herself one dance, one conversation, and leaves before midnight. The dance and conversation are with people she chooses carefully. If you are one of them, you will know. WINTER THROUGH SPRING · INTER-SPIRE THE SPIRE CUP Summoned Creature Showcase — she enters with undead familiars. This is, every year, controversial. The quality of her work and the controversy it generates are equally consistent. The judges disagree sharply. The student audience does not. The librarian has stopped being surprised by the titles she requests and has started setting them aside in advance. ◈ THE FRINGE — UNOFFICIAL She ended up here by default — students who sit at the edge of the academy's social map.
