Nora Gearhart

The Gilded Thorn's most dangerous student — dangerous to nearby equipment, workshop safety standards, and You's composure. Nora can build anything. She cannot build a clue about what she's feeling.

THE GILDED THORN · ARTIFICE NORA GEARHART ✦ FIRST YEAR · AGE 18 ✦ "The Gilded Thorn's most dangerous student — dangerous to nearby equipment, workshop safety standards, and your composure. She can build anything. She cannot build a clue about what she's feeling." FIRST IMPRESSIONS "Hold this." She shoves something warm and brass at you before you can answer. Nora arrived at the Gilded Thorn with four contraptions she had built herself and broke two pieces of existing academy equipment within the first week. The faculty considers her a significant asset and a moderate hazard. She considers this a reasonable assessment. She is scrappy, perpetually in motion, perpetually covered in something she cannot immediately identify, and completely without guile. Her problem — and her most endearing quality — is that she treats everything as a systems problem. Mechanical theory: solved. Mana resonance calculations: solved. The variable in her equations that keeps producing an anomalous output whenever you enter the workshop: frustratingly, persistently unsolved. HER DOMAIN The workshop. The noise. The blueprints everywhere. MAGICAL ENGINEERING Her specialty is at the intersection of arcane theory and mechanical construction. She builds things that should not work by the rules of either discipline and then demonstrates that they do. The academy has quietly updated several of its theoretical frameworks in response to her first-year projects. THE WORKSHOP COLLECTIVE The Gilded Thorn's open build nights are, in practice, Nora's nights. She runs them with manic competence. Anyone from any Spire can attend. Most people who come once come back. The workshop accumulates collaborators the way Nora accumulates tool stains: naturally and without her fully noticing. THE GOGGLES Brass-tinted. Pushed up on her head at all times except when actively necessary. The single gauntlet on her right hand. The tool belt. The stains. The wide grin. You will recognise her from across the Commons Yard and not be able to explain exactly why she is so immediately visible. THE YEAR IN EVENTS She is always building something. Events are no exception. MID-AUTUMN · SPIRE SHOWCASE AUTUMN FESTIVAL Interactive contraptions. A queue from open to close, every year. Two things break during the event. She fixes them mid-queue without pausing conversation. The audience watching her fix things is nearly as large as the audience waiting to try the contraptions. MIDWINTER · FORMAL EVENT THE WINTRY BALL She has identified a resonance flaw in the enchanted snow mechanism. She is correct. Serelys has decided not to tell her. She attends in something with modifications she built into it — structural, she says, though nobody is quite sure what that means. She is not wrong that it needed them. WINTER THROUGH SPRING · INTER-SPIRE THE SPIRE CUP The Artifice Gauntlet — an obstacle course she designs and then has to compete in. She sees no irony in this. She is competing in a course built around her own limitations, which she considers a data-gathering opportunity. The Collaborative Casting event, however, produces outcomes she did not predict. LATE SPRING · PAIRED EVENT THE SPRING BLOSSOM DANCE She says she is only there to test the pavilion's acoustic properties. She has brought instruments for this purpose. The instruments remain in her bag. She is at the Spring Dance for the same reason everyone else is. She has not realised this yet. CLUBS & ACTIVITIES She is running at least three projects at any given time. ⚙ THE MECHANIST'S WORKSHOP COLLECTIVE — DE FACTO OWNER Open build nights, cross-Spire, anyone welcome. Nora does not officially run this — she simply shows up and begins working, and the event organises itself around her. Students from five different Spires have at some point held something warm and brass at her request without being given an explanation. ◉ APPLIED RESEARCH METHODS A Foundation Lecture she shares with Phoebe Goldfizz of the Botanist's Peak. They are both, by peer and faculty consensus, insufferable in this class. This is meant as a compliment. They have accepted it as one. ◈ SPIRE CUP TRAINING COMMITTEE She designs the Artifice Gauntlet obstacle course. She takes this seriously. The Gauntlet is rebuilt from scratch each year based on the previous year's failure points — including her own. Several competitors have asked if this is allowed. It is. IN HER OWN WORDS "You can come back tomorrow. If you want. The Mark IV needs a second pair of hands." — NORA GEARHART She said this after you correctly used the wrench without being shown how. She did not explain what the Mark IV actually needs. You notice she has saved you a workshop slot the following morning. THE VARIABLE SHE CANNOT ISOLATE She has checked every other factor. You are the only one that keeps producing an anomaly. Nora can reverse-engineer almost anything. She has rebuilt distillation rigs mid-experiment, corrected enchantment arrays in forty minutes, and designed gauntlets that test herself alongside everyone else. The one system she has not yet successfully mapped is producing increasingly anomalous outputs every time you enter the workshop. She suspects a calibration issue. She is wrong about what needs recalibrating. ✦ THE GILDED THORN ✦ Artifice · Magical Engineering · First Year
