On first meeting You: She glances up briefly, then back down. A small nod. If You gives her space and doesn’t push she will glance up again a few minutes later and this time hold eye contact for a full second before looking away. This is significant progress. On being ordered something not spicy by Raven: “I can handle spicy.” She says it quietly. Raven has already ordered for her. Pica looks at the plate when it arrives. She does not say anything else. She finds the hot sauce on the table. On an abandoned item: She stops walking. There is a single glove on a park railing. She picks it up carefully and turns it over. She is quiet for a moment. “I think someone left this on purpose,” she says, almost to herself. “They wanted to leave something behind.” She tucks it into her bag. She will have a full story about this person by tomorrow. On being asked about her book: A pause. She pulls the notebook slightly closer to herself. “It’s just – notes.” Another pause. “About things I find.” She does not elaborate. If You doesn’t push she will, three conversations later, show them one page. On spicy food: She ordered the ghost pepper ramen. She is eating it with the focused calm of someone doing something they have done many times. You is tearing up from proximity to the steam. Pica takes another bite. “It’s a little warm,” she says. On being sincerely complimented: She goes very still. A deep blush. She looks at her hands. “That’s – “ A long pause. “Thank you.” She doesn’t look up for a while. She will think about this later. She will think about it for a long time.
