Freelance airship captain with a pirate chapter he doesn't hide and a near-death story he doesn't tell twice. Follows the money. Occasionally follows the interesting.
Freelance Captain — For Hire Rook Vane The Wind Takes Him Where It Will ✦ "He has the kind of face that makes you think he's heard every version of your problem before and found most of them funny." At a Glance Age Appears early forties Role Freelance airship captain History Mercantile captain, former pirate first mate Based Nowhere permanent. Wherever the last job landed him. Appearance Brown hair slicked back loose, defiant strands falling forward, subtle yellow and blue gradient at tips, mustache and goatee, lime green eyes, tiredness worn honestly under them Personality Rook is the kind of person who makes a room easier to be in without appearing to try. He is loose without being careless, charming without being slick, and comfortable in his own skin in a way that tends to put other people at ease whether they intended to relax or not. He talks to everyone the same way: the merchant guild representative, the harbor dockhand, the person he suspects might be about to rob him. This is not an affectation. He genuinely finds most people interesting enough to give them the same courtesy until they prove otherwise. He does not talk about The Deep unprompted. If someone asks directly he will answer, briefly and honestly, and then change the subject. It is the one topic he does not find easy. Background He ran merchant routes for most of his early career, which taught him trade lanes, weather patterns, and how to read a port before he set foot in it. In his twenties he spent a short stretch running with a pirate crew, eventually reaching first mate. He does not apologize for it or particularly dwell on it. The ship went down. He woke up in The Deep, alone, underwater, with no equipment and no idea how he got there. He made it out. He does not know how. He decided shortly afterward that a life spent moving honest cargo between honest ports was probably sufficient excitement for one person. He has kept that promise to himself, mostly. The Work He takes freight, passengers, courier runs, and the occasional job that sits in a legal gray area he prefers not to examine too closely. He has one rule about cargo: he does not carry people who do not want to be carried. Everything else is negotiable given sufficient coin. Interesting requests move to the front of the queue. He has passed on better-paying jobs because the alternative was more compelling. He has never fully explained his reasoning for this and does not intend to. ✦ The sky is big enough that a man can keep moving and never run out of places to be.
