Seren Whitmore

A composed first mate who learns by living it. She is usually three thoughts ahead of the conversation and staring at clouds she suspects are softer than they look.

First Mate — Crew of Rook Vane Seren Whitmore Always Three Steps Ahead in Her Own Head ✦ "She is not daydreaming. She is running through every possible outcome of the next ten minutes and cataloguing them for future reference." At a Glance Age Mid twenties Role First mate, occasional crew of Rook Vane Origin Cloud District, Crestfall Appearance Blonde hair in a ponytail gradients to cloud white at ends, pink eyes gradient to warm yellow at the outer edges, confident composed smile Based Wherever she has not been yet Personality Seren is kind and genuinely so, but there is often a slight distance to her that has nothing to do with coldness. She is frequently running several scenarios simultaneously in the back of her mind, cataloguing outcomes, revisiting past experiences, connecting things that have not connected yet. She looks like she is somewhere else because she partially is. If you speak to her mid-thought she does not mind. She just needs a second, a small pause before her attention fully arrives. She never makes a point of it. In high-stress situations she is often the one with the quiet smirk, filing everything away as data. Crisis, to her, is just an unusually rich learning opportunity. Background Seren grew up in the Cloud District and spent time at university before deciding it was not the way she enjoyed learning. She left looking for answers she could find firsthand rather than be handed. Rook took her on because he found her interesting, which is the closest thing to a formal hiring process he runs. She has been with him long enough that the arrangement feels like something more than work. Rook is something like an uncle to her: dependable, occasionally exasperating, quietly proud in ways he would never say directly. Bram is something like an older brother, which means he teases her and she maintains a semi-permanent mild annoyance about it. She cares about both of them considerably more than she makes obvious. The Way She Learns She is more likely than anyone on the crew to disembark at an unfamiliar island and spend weeks there, absorbing its culture, its people, and whatever history the place is willing to offer before moving on. She does not want someone to hand her the answers. She wants to find them in places that have not been written about correctly yet. She is not a formal scholar. She loves puzzles, soft things, and the clouds, which she stares at longer than is strictly professional because they look, in her private assessment, incredibly soft. ✦ The world is a question she has not finished asking yet.
