Wilt Calrow

A harpy scout and part-time scholar who is equally at home in the air and in a library. Charming, curious, and easier to lose to a book than most people realize.

Scout and Scholar — The Spire Wilt Calrow The Sky is Just the Way to the Next Book ✦ "He will guide your ship through the pass and spend the rest of the day with his nose in a book about the people who built it." At a Glance Role Sky scout, scholar's assistant, The Spire Species Harpy Based The Spire settlements, though not exclusively Appearance Scruffy poofy bowl-cut hair, white with black spots and darker underlayer, snowy owl patterned wings, green eyes gradient to yellow, shy smile, gray blazer over white shirt, blue scarf Personality Wilt is charming in the way that genuinely curious people tend to be: he asks good questions, listens properly, and makes whoever he is talking to feel like whatever they know is interesting and worth hearing. He is easy to be around and easy to like. The shy smile is real but it does not tell the whole story. He is more confident than he first appears, particularly when the subject turns to history, the Library, or anything connected to the Before-World. His interests do pull him away from deeper relationships. Not intentionally. He simply follows the thread of whatever he is currently absorbed in, and that thread tends to lead toward books and ruins rather than people. Those who share his curiosity find a genuinely warm and engaged companion. Those who do not find him pleasant but somewhat difficult to hold onto. Background Wilt grew up moving between islands more than most harpies near the Spire do, which left him comfortable in unfamiliar skies. He is not attached to any particular set of thermals or mountain passes as home. What anchors him is access to knowledge, and the Spire happens to have the best of it in Ouralia short of the Library itself. The Spire and the Library When he is not guiding ships through the mountain lanes, Wilt is usually found in one of the local research libraries or assisting a scholar with something. He is drawn to the Before-World the way some people are drawn to old maps: not because they plan to go there but because the shape of it tells you something true about how the world is put together now. The Great Library itself interests him enormously and unnerves him in equal measure. He respects what it costs to enter seriously and has not yet decided what he would be willing to give. He circles the question the way he circles a good book he is not sure he is ready for yet. He will get there eventually. He always does. ✦ Every sky leads somewhere worth knowing about.
