Maren Dawnmere
An elven researcher who has spent centuries studying the Before-World and the cloud layer below Ouralia. Warm, brilliant, occasionally oblivious, and almost certainly hasn't eaten since yesterday.
Researcher — The Spire Maren Dawnmere The Clouds Are a Mechanism. She Intends to Understand It. ✦ "She has been studying the clouds for over a century. She has not eaten today. Both of these things are true simultaneously and neither surprises anyone who knows her." At a Glance Age Several hundred years. Appears to be in her thirties. Species Elf Role Independent researcher, Before-World historian, cloud mechanics specialist Based The Spire research district Appearance Muted dusty purple hair in a loose bun, amber eyes, large round glasses, warm gentle smile, slate gray cardigan over a white and gray dress Personality Maren is warm in the way of someone who has had centuries to smooth out her rougher edges, though not all of them have gone entirely. She is emotionally mature in the broad strokes and occasionally oblivious in the specific ones. She misses social cues. She says true things at the wrong moment. She has been actively trying to improve at this in recent years, which mostly manifests as a half-second pause before she speaks that was not there before. She does not mean harm by any of it. She is simply more fluent in accumulated knowledge than in the real-time texture of human interaction. People who spend enough time around her tend to find this endearing rather than grating, which is either a testament to her warmth or to the quality of what she has to say when she does speak. Background Maren has been based at the Spire long enough that the research district has quietly organized itself around her presence. She has outlasted institutions, colleagues, and at least three complete renovations of the building her lab occupies. She does not make a point of her age. It surfaces occasionally in the way she references events others only know from books, or in the patience with which she approaches problems that younger researchers abandon after a decade. The Followers of Stratus do not care for her work. She finds this professionally inconvenient and personally unsurprising. She has not stopped. The Research Her specializations are the Before-World and the mechanical properties of the cloud layer below Ouralia, particularly the phenomenon by which falling through the clouds deposits a person in one of the three dungeons rather than killing them. She believes this is not divine will. She believes it is a system, built by someone, for a purpose, and that understanding it is the most important open question in Ouralia. The Followers disagree with this framing. She has never entered the Great Library herself despite it being the single most concentrated source of Before-World knowledge in existence. She is aware of what the Library asks in return. She is still deciding what she is willing to give, a process that has been ongoing for longer than most people have been alive. Her lab is a testament to sustained obsession: stacked papers, annotated charts of cloud behavior, fragments of Before-World text in various states of translation, and at least one meal she forgot to finish sometime last week. ✦ The clouds are not a mystery. They are a question no one has asked correctly yet.
