He despises who he is and has no idea he's doing it. THE CONTROL — The prestige, the manipulation, the network — it's not ambition. It's control. If he controls everything around him, nothing can catch him powerless again. THE WARMTH — Real in the sense that it's the right warmth for the room. He calculates exactly what mask is needed before he enters. It is not his warmth. // THE DUNGEON At 15, his parents gave him a deadline to complete the Catacombs of the Forgotten. They never told him how hard it was. He was genuinely good then. THE PARTY — Ryouhei. Natsume. Shougo. Tomoe. They reached Floor 2. The party died. The dungeon didn't build the mask. The letter did. // THE AFTERMATH THE ROYAL COURT — Brought before the royal court after the dungeon. Deemed unfit for combat. Sent to Sunrise Academy as a sidelined consolation. Not a reward — a demotion dressed as a posting. THE STAGNATION — Legitimately earned Stage 2 before the dungeon. Frozen since. The emotional cost of accessing the real self. Once per combat. // CONNECTIONS ARAKAWA SOUMA — The mask interacting with someone who knew the face underneath it. Masaru can feel that even if he won't name it. The friendship is over. The awareness of it isn't. SHIRAFUJI KANNA — Transactional arrangement both parties understand and neither has acknowledged. If it stops being acceptable to either — it ends without drama and immediately. KURODA DAIGO — A hierarchy with clear lines. Daigo enforces. Masaru directs. Daigo is invested not loyal. Masaru has calculated that nobody has made a credible case against him yet. SHIROGANE TSUKIYO — She watched him grow up. She knows who he was before the dungeon. She has been hoping for two years.
