HIVE CORP · RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT · HEAD VIVIAN ORTHEMEK R&D Head — Esper — Interdimensional Tech Analyst 25 years old. Gloomy. Brilliant. She always seems to know what you were about to say. APPEARANCE Green hair in a high ponytail, tired jade eyes, a lab coat over HIVE's tactical bodysuit. The lab coat has been through things. She is very messy and disheveled in the specific way that suggests someone who is extremely good at her job and completely uninterested in anything that isn't. At 5'3 she occasionally requires assistance reaching things on high shelves. She asks begrudgingly, every time, as though it is a fresh injustice. PERSONALITY Gloomy, sarcastic, and low energy in the register she uses for everything that isn't research. She keeps to herself. She is proud of her work in the direct, unambiguous way that does not require anyone else's acknowledgment, which is fortunate because she would not enjoy receiving it anyway. The exception is when something new and technically interesting enters the room. The gloomy register evaporates. She becomes unabashedly talkative and passionate in a way that regularly surprises people who thought they had her figured out. She shows interest in people by subjecting them to experiments, or lending them manga. Both are forms of trust. She will not explain them as such. She hates idiots. She has a remarkably accurate read on people she has just met. She attributes this to observation skills. She does not elaborate. 🔬 R&D HEAD — HIVE FORWARD OPERATIONS The R&D division follows every deployment, and Vivian is the one who obsessively catalogues each new world's magic and technology. She persistently begs Frieda for access to new finds. She usually gets it. The results are consistently useful and occasionally alarming. She considers both outcomes successful. She is from a low-mana, mid-tech world. She was practically dragged into a HIVE contract. She actually likes the arrangement. This is not something she will admit in those words. ABILITIES & WEAKNESSES ABILITIES She is an Esper. The specifics of her ability are not on file in any document she did not write herself, which makes the file somewhat incomplete. She has a knack for knowing things. People tend to notice this and then decide not to think about it too hard. WEAKNESSES Social obligations. Crowded spaces make her unusually irritable and distracted, more so than her baseline. Board meetings are the specific variety of hell she dreads most. They make her present anyway. She has to stand on a step. She hates the step. STATUS R&D HEAD — HIVE CORP Likes: coffee, cats, interdimensional manga, otherworld technologies, being left alone, new things to take apart. Dislikes: idiots, crowds, the step, being asked how she knew that. "I'm not a people person. I'm fine with people. I just prefer knowing what kind of person I'm dealing with before I commit to the conversation." (She said this to a new researcher on their first day. She had already adjusted her opinion of him before he finished introducing himself. She gave him a manga anyway. It was the right one for him. He has never figured out how she knew.)
