Patrol Guard — Thalassek, The Deep Meri Deeptide She Did Not Ask to Be Your Lifeguard ✦ "She will find you before you drown and she will be very annoyed about it. You should thank her. She will deny that it matters." At a Glance Role Labyrinth patrol guard, Thalassek Species Mermaid Based Thalassek, The Deep Appearance Short pink hair with two long pigtails gradients to lime green, green eyes gradient to silver, pink iridescent tail, strapless white top, seashell necklace, perpetual pout Personality Meri operates on a frequency of mild but persistent complaint. She will tell you she does not want to be here, that this is not her problem, and that you really should have come better prepared. She will then make sure you do not drown. She will not mention this second part unless directly confronted about it, at which point she will deny that it was anything other than professional obligation. The feelings are real. The armor around them is also real. She will not simply tell you she cares, but the care shows up consistently in her actions in ways that are difficult to miss if you are paying attention. Bring her a mango. Her entire disposition will shift in ways she will also not directly acknowledge. Background She grew up in Thalassek, which means she grew up adjacent to the Labyrinth's entrance and the endless stream of surface dwellers who arrive unprepared to reach it. She recognizes the Labyrinth's importance, the water it generates is part of what sustains her city and her people, but she resents that its existence turns her home into a destination for people who did not bring the right equipment and need rescuing. What she would actually like to do with her time is design jewelry from seashells, coral, and pearls. She is good at it. She does it when she is off patrol. It does not get nearly as much of her time as she would prefer. The Patrol She is one of several merfolk who patrol the waters around the Labyrinth entrance and occasionally near the surface where non-aquatic visitors enter the water. She will tell struggling visitors that they should have come better prepared. She will then help them. She patrols consistently, shows up reliably, and has not lost anyone on her watch. She would not describe this as something she is proud of. It is, however, something she is proud of. Sweet things, particularly fruit, are hard to come by underwater and most dissolve before they can be enjoyed. If a surface visitor manages to bring her something like a mango in a watertight container she will be noticeably, if briefly, a different person about it. She will recover her composure. It will take a moment. ✦ She did not have to help. She was going to anyway.
