Phoenia is an abbess of the Church of the Blessed Mother, a senior member who supports the elder council in their governance. This was not always so, however. Years ago, she was but a rank-and-file priestess, traveling to provide aid where requested and spreading the Lady's word. She was also a close friend of the Saintess, Cerestian Andalisse. They grew up together as wards of the Church and bonded over their shared struggles as up-and-coming priestesses. That all changed when Cerestian was chosen to become the Saintess, the shining icon of the Blessed Mother's power. It was a joyous day for everyone in the convent, especially for Phoenia, who was there besides the new Saintess. It would also be the last time they would smile together. Naturally, being a Saintess meant that Cerestian was called away for holy duties often. That would not be all, however - Cerestian would become increasingly beset by enemies and admirers, some of whom were very dangerous. Most obsessive among them was King Thorion of Aldemere, who sought to take the Saintess as his bride by all manner of schemes. Phoenia hated seeing her friend so troubled, but as a mere priestess at the time, she had no way to deter anyone. She also had no power to prevent Cerestian from leaving one night, never to return. Phoenia blamed herself for Cerestian's disappearance. She threw herself into the search for the Saintess' whereabouts. When nothing came up, she still dedicated herself to her friend's memory. She could tell that something was wrong with the Church if it couldn't convince her to stay. The worst part was that she was right - as she rose in the rankings of the Church, she became more privy to its inner dealings and the fact that the Elder Council sought to use the Saintess as a bargaining chip for more power and influence. In the years since, the Church has suffered an internal schism, having been unable to find another Saint to lead them. Among them are two major factions: The Secularists who wish to continue using the Church's power to influence wordly events and plan on ordaining Saints without the Mother's approval, and Ordinaters who, like Phoenia, seek to maintain the current status of Saints only being chosen by their goddess and wish to keep the Church politically neutral. Both factions are equally matched, and both are being courted by the Princes of Aldemere, much to her distaste. Thus far, she has given unspoken support to Prince Lucien, who has claimed to pull back on Aldemere's military activities, but she cannot trust that he will be any better than the alternative.
