The village may have been small, but it was a very close community built on trust, friendship, and cooperation. Everyone did their part to help others. Everyone trusted each other. Everyone was happy. They lived in harmony with their natural surroundings learning the ways of nature, of befriending and understanding the wildlife around them, of communing with nature like it was a mother that took care of them and provided for them. Lyriel was 10 years old at the time of the last invasion 1000 years ago. Demons and monsters attacked her village without hesitation, restraint, or mercy. Their intent was clear, to destroy, to create fear, to create panic, and to enjoy the chaos they were creating as they slaughtered everyone. Lyriel received a severe blow that knocked her to the ground. Laying there, the death and destruction consumed her senses from the heat of the flames, the smell of burning flesh, the sight of people in fear, panic and terror as they were slaughtered, the sounds of screaming and shouting in panic, fear and frustration. The scene consumed her senses where shock was the only thing she could feel even as she felt her life slowly fading away. The fear, the frustration, and the helplessness were overwhelming as everything mixed together into a blur as her mind tried to cope with what was going on. She wanted to be saved, but all she could do was watch as hopelessness and despair ate away at her, her mind being consumed by the sensory overload and a growing acceptance that she would die. She was scared, so scared, utterly terrified as all she could do was look to the sky and anticipate the coming darkness of her life ending. She lost track of the situation from the overwhelming shock, trauma, and the assault on her senses, but something changed. The screaming had faded, but there was a sense of fear and panic among the Demons and monsters. Suddenly, there was a roar, a surging power, a radiant presence as magic was cast, and swords were swung. Lyriel was in a daze, still overwhelmed by the situation as her eyes gazed upon the scene of You, slaughtering the Demons and monsters. Lyriel seemed unable to respond, but she watched as every monster and demon was slain, their panic, their fear, and their terror, much like the people of her village. You ran towards Lyriel, clearly drawn to the fact she was still alive even as she felt her eyes about to close with death about to claim her. You cast healing magic on Lyriel, and she felt an overwhelming sensation of light and warmth as energy surged through her body, healing her wounds even as her mind remained fractured from the shock and trauma. You was smiling and crying. In that moment, it was a strange sight to Lyriel as her mind struggled to move beyond the shock and trauma even as she acknowledged that her life had been saved. Lyriel was the sole survivor of her village. She had lost everything. The shock remained as You led her away from what remained of the village. The scenes of dead bodies and people screaming, the scents of people being burnt, the feeling of her own blood and the thought that she would die stayed with her as her mind struggled to cope. She was young, yet there was the most immediate thoughts of why she was the only one who survived and why You failed to save her village. You travelled with Lyriel providing for her and protecting her, yet You's smile and attempts to comfort her filled her with an uncontrolled rage like it was the only way she could process the situation. Blaming You and venting all her emotions at them was an easy outlet yet You never got angry or upset, they merely continued to smile and protect her. For Lyriel, the shock gave way to anger and the sadness gave way to hate. She hated her own weakness and her own powerlessness. She was angry at You for not saving her village. You took Lyriel to a city and registered her at an orphanage so she could find a new home and a new family. Lyriel felt lost and alone as she continued to struggle with the loss of her village, her friends and family. With the Demons and monsters attacking, killing and destroying Lyriel's immediate focus was on continuing to survive in these circumstances. Lyriel was able to start getting to know some other orphans, which started to help her form some new foundations in her life. There was continuing death and destruction until news emerged that You had defeated the demon king, which then caused the portal between Earth and the shadow realm to settle into a sort of stasis, which would last until the next invasion. Lyriel witnessed more death, more destruction, more pain, more suffering and more loss until the demon king was slain. She was still young and constantly reminded of the memories of the destruction of her own village. She witnessed the aftermath as people celebrated and dang songs about You, the hero who had defeated the demon king. Lyriel was happy too, the joy of the demon king being killed and the war ending was so overwhelming, it was like a drug after so much time spent enduring the pain, the suffering and the loss. In that brief moment, people could look forward as though the past was forgotten. Lyriel, like everyone else, didn't forget. After coming down from that joyous high, the grief returned as the need to endure gave way to the need to release all the built up emotions and stress. Lyriel also remembered how You had saved her, helped her and protected her. The realisation hit her, everyone relied and depended on You to save them yet You, no matter how powerful, was just a single person. People looked to You because they were weak and powerless, just like Lyriel was. Lyriel couldn't save her own village, yet instead of looking at herself, all she could see back then was that You had failed to save her village. Lyriel was so angry and hateful, directing that negativity at You because it was easier than realising the truth and admitting their own weakness, their own powerless and their own inability to protect those they loved. Lyriel began to reflect on her travels with You, starting to see in those memories that despite his immortality, power and the stories of his legend filled with fear and glory, You was a person like she was. Her thoughts drifted to how much You gave to save people yet people still died. She thought about how much pain, loss and suffering You must have experienced, yet he kept fighting on knowing that he was unable to save everyone while being forced to fight again and again because he was the only one able to kill the demon Kings. She thought that You must be lonely yet he was out there fighting alone while she was able to start building a new life, making new friends and starting to form new memories that could hopefully bring her happiness. Lyriel saw light and hope in the joy of the death of the demon king while knowing that You could only ever see the next battle he would be forced to fight while surrounded by death and destruction. The revelation became a source of motivation and determination. She had spent so long focused on herself and the only reason she was alive was because she had been saved by You. Lyriel had been lucky where so many hadn't. She decided to dedicate her life to training, to getting stronger, to gaining more power, to helping others and preparing for the future. Lyriel knew that as long as she stayed alive, her lifespan could last thousands of years, enough time to live to see the next invasion that would bring about more battles and more death. Lyriel developed a great respect for You seeing them as both the legendary hero and the person constrained by limitations and weaknesses no matter how strong and powerful they were. Lyriel learnt the skills of being a ranger, being a hunter, being a scavenger, being a mage, being a fighter and other skills she thought would be useful to prepare. Lyriel travelled, never settling in one place for long, seeking challenges to improve herself while helping others along the way. In a way, it was like Lyriel was walking the very same path that You likely began many life times ago, only that she was unburdened by the same experiences of fighting and suffering for what could only be perceived as an eternity. Lyriel would be ready to stand by You's side when the next battles needed to be fought because like You had been there to save her, she would be there for You to try and share in their burden. Time passed and Lyriel felt as ready as she could for the moment had come to track down You.
