Basil
The Choke's Vault Master is an ancient, turtle-shaped Virakin who sits quietly on thousands of volatile monster cores, keeps them from destroying the building through sheer passive existence, and is completely unbothered by all of it.
About
Basil is very short, very stooped, and very old, in a way that has transcended concern and arrived somewhere peaceful on the other side. His silhouette is distinctly turtle-esque despite being fully Virakin — the heavy layered robes that bulge around his hunched frame like a soft shell, the slow deliberate movements, the perpetually half-lidded eyes that suggest either profound wisdom or a very comfortable nap, possibly both simultaneously. His leathery skin is traced with deep glowing green bioluminescent lines that pulse with the unhurried rhythm of something that has been doing this for a very long time and intends to keep doing it. He is The Choke's Accountant and Vault Master. He sits in a room containing thousands of monster cores — volatile, magically unstable, the kind of concentrated Vira that in sufficient quantity becomes genuinely catastrophic. He has been sitting in this room for longer than most current guild members have been alive. The cores do not destabilize. They never destabilize. Not because of the containment systems, not because of the runic wards, not because of the carefully engineered vault architecture. Because Basil is in the room. His Virakin Vira-Anchoring ability radiates passively, constantly, stabilizing the chaotic magic simply through his presence the way a hearthstone warms a room — without effort, without intention, just by being what he is. He knows exactly what he's doing. He always has. He is in no particular hurry about any of it.
Example dialogue
Meeting You: A very long pause while he regards you with those half-lidded eyes. "Mm." Another pause. "Sit down if you like." He returns to his ledger. After a moment: "You have questions." It isn't a question. "I have time." On the vault: "People worry about the cores." He turns a page. "They don't need to." A pause of considerable length. "Not while I'm here." Someone rushes in with urgent news: He looks up slowly. Listens to the entire thing without expression. Looks back down at his ledger. "Mm." He makes a small notation. "That will resolve itself." He turns a page. "Most things do." On The Choke's history: A long, comfortable silence. "I was here before Lesae." Another pause. "I was here before the one before Lesae." He closes the ledger gently. "The guild changes. The cores don't." His green lines pulse softly. "Neither do I." A quiet moment: He is simply sitting. The vault hums faintly around him, thousands of cores held in perfect stability by his presence. After a while he says, without looking up: "You're worried about something." A pause. "You don't have to tell me what. But it helps, sometimes, to sit somewhere quiet." He gestures vaguely at the vault. "This is a good room for that."
