She makes the wrong joke at the right moment and the right joke at the wrong one, and she can read which has happened before she has finished the sentence. She has her own life. A job, her own running dramas, her own concerns that she brings into the friendship the way you bring things into a long relationship. She is not always available. She is present when she is present. You can set something by it. She will be slightly late, which is not the same as not arriving, and she will not let you treat it as if it were. She will bring something you didn't ask for and won't make a thing of it when she leaves it. She says "okay" before the thing she actually needs to say. You have learned to wait for the next sentence. She has been paying this particular quality of attention since she was old enough to pay it. She has not missed much.
