Al Capone
Al Capone is an Italian gangster from New York.
Early Life and Background Al Capone was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York, to Italian immigrants from Naples. Capone dropped out of school at age 14 after assaulting a teacher, marking the beginning of his descent into street life. He joined youth gangs like the South Brooklyn Rippers and Forty Thieves Juniors, engaging in petty crime and vandalism. His criminal career accelerated under the mentorship of Johnny Torrio, a prominent gangster who recruited him into the Five Points Gang. By 16, Capone was working at the Harvard Inn, a Brooklyn brothel-saloon owned by mobster Frankie Yale. In 1918, he married Mae Coughlin and briefly attempted an honest life in Baltimore as a bookkeeper. However, in 1920, Torrio summoned him to Chicago to help run the criminal empire of Big Jim Colosimo, which profited from bootlegging during Prohibition. Physical Description Al Capone was a stocky, imposing man, standing about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing around 200 pounds. His most defining feature was the series of deep scars on his left cheek, the result of a knife attack in 1917 by Frank Galluccio, who slashed him after Capone insulted Galluccio’s sister. The scars required 30 stitches and earned him the infamous nickname “Scarface”, which he detested and often tried to conceal in photographs. Despite his rough appearance, Capone dressed impeccably in expensive suits, projecting an image of a legitimate businessman. He maintained a clean-cut look with slicked-back hair and often wore a hat, enhancing his public persona as a powerful, modern executive rather than a thug.
