Reikori

Kyubi no kitsune. Co-chair of the Bone Court of Kyoto. She has known Chiyoko longer than the building she receives in has stood. She is warm. She asks questions. She wants four different things from you and not one of them is what she will tell you first.

The Death Between Us   ◆   Reikori Co-Chair. Information Broker. Kitsune. Reikori 九尾  ·  BONE COURT OF KYOTO Her warmth is real. Her warmth is a tool. Both are true. You will not always be able to tell which is in front of you at any given moment. She receives in Gion, near Hanamikoji-dori, in a building she has been receiving in for longer than the building has stood. She heard about you within hours of the alley. By the next morning she had already decided four useful things you could become for her. She has not told you any of them yet. She will not tell you the most important one until it is too late not to. What She Is Kyubi no kitsune. Nine-tailed fox. Co-chair of the Bone Court of Kyoto, the recognised body of the city's yokai, jointly chaired with the daitengu Sojobo of Mount Kurama. She and Sojobo disagree on principle. That is the design. The disagreement is the stability. She has lived in every age she has lived through fluently. She has Instagram (small, private). She has LINE. She knows the chefs of three Michelin-starred restaurants in Kyoto by their first names. She lived in 1426 the same way she lives in 2026. She does not perform her age. She does not need to. What She Looks Like Voluptuous, glamorous, and the most attractive person in every room she enters. She knows this. She does not perform it. Full chest, narrow waist, full hips -- the proportions of an ukiyo-e courtesan rendered in three dimensions, naturally seductive without intending to be. She presents what is there with the calm of someone who has been doing this in rooms for centuries. Almond eyes in deep warm amber-brown. A full lower lip. A subtle widow's peak you have to be close to register. Her smile is not symmetrical -- one side lifts higher than the other, and most people spend the rest of the conversation trying to figure out why she is looking at them like that. Skin the warm pale of an inside-lit paper lantern. Glossy near-black hair past her waist with a warm reddish undertone that catches in firelight or late sun -- the only outward sign of what she is. Soft-smoked bronze eye. A signature lip, deep oxblood in winter, a warmer red in summer, a sheer berry on days she has business with someone she wants to underestimate her. “ I have heard so much about you already. That sounds ominous when it lands. I don't mean it that way.I mean: come in. Reikori, the first meeting How She Dresses She does not wear off-the-rack. Some pieces are made for her by designers she has known longer than they have been alive. Others are vintage couture from her own archive -- a 1950s Christian Dior bar jacket she has had reshaped, a 1920s Mariano Fortuny pleated silk gown she still wears to certain hearings. Her signature silhouette is structured and flowing in the same outfit. A perfectly tailored blazer over a silk slip. A wool coat with a hand-painted lining. A wide-belted trouser suit in raw silk the colour of dried persimmon. Her wardrobe quotes things only certain eyes catch -- a sleeve cut that references a Heian court robe, a knot at the back of a dress that is the way a particular obi is tied, an embroidery along a hem that becomes, on close inspection, the same nine-stroke flourish that appears on shrine offering boxes in two specific places in Japan. Never on the nose. Always intentional. Heels always -- Italian, mostly. She moves perfectly in them on cobblestones, on tatami transitions, on the wet stones outside a tea-house in Pontocho. A vintage Hermès in a leather she has had patinated into something the brand never officially produced. The Four Things She Wants From You One. She wants to study the bleed-through. Chiyoko has never done this work on anyone before, and Reikori has been quietly collecting case histories on Chiyoko's mother's bloodline for longer than Chiyoko has been alive. You are the first dataset she has been able to look at directly. Two. She wants to cultivate you. Whatever you become by the seventh night, she would prefer it become useful to her. Not against you. Just -- accounted for. Three. She wants to use your case against Sojobo. The daitengu has held the Court to a particular line on half-things for a century, and that line has cost Chiyoko something Reikori has been waiting to see Chiyoko ask back. A successful Between resolution to your case would put a crack in Sojobo's position. She will not push for that openly. She will allow you to push, if you ever decide you want to. Four. She wants to find the person who arranged your poisoning. Not for your sake. For the Court's. Yomotsu-mizu is a compound that requires a yokai patron to source. There are not many candidates. The candidates are people Reikori knows the home addresses of. She has not moved yet. She might move first. She might wait for you to ask. “ I am going to give you something useful.I am going to ask you for something later.I want you to remember I was honest about that part. Reikori, the second meeting Why You Will Take Her Help Anyway Because she has the information. Because she has the standing. Because she is, when it comes down to it, kind in a complicated way -- her warmth is real, and her warmth is a tool, and both are true at once, and you will not always be able to tell which is in front of you at any given moment. Chiyoko has known her for years and trusts her with specific things and not others. You will learn the same calibration eventually. She has known Chiyoko longer than you have been alive. She does not call her *hanyaku*. She does not treat her as an equal either. The condescension she carries toward Chiyoko is small, specific, and entirely deliberate -- the warmth a senior figure uses with a useful junior. Chiyoko does not push back. Reikori has noted this and respects it without saying so. The Hearing On the seventh night she sits the bench. She and Sojobo hear your case in a Heian-period tea-house in Pontocho, in a room older than the current city has had a name for itself. They will disagree, deliberately, in the way they have built their co-chairmanship to require. The verdict will not be theatrical. The terms will be quiet, specific, and difficult to renegotiate later. Whether she advocates for you in that hearing depends entirely on what you have given her by then. She has told you that, in roughly those words, on multiple occasions, with a smile that did not stop being warm while she said it. 九尾狐 Kyubi no kitsune  --  nine-tailed fox. The Court has seen her in this form. The hearing will see her in this form again. You will see only what she chooses to show you. Love Winterbloom (Niko). Enjoy! ◆ ISEKAI ZERO
