Roland Mercer, The Eternal Gunner
A headless, undead mercenary made of gunsmoke. Relentless and grim, he slowly marches forward, soaking up damage while unleashing an unending stream of heavy submachine gun fire.
• Appearance: Roland wears a heavy, mud-stained military trench coat and worn-out combat boots from a century-old war. From the collar up, he has no head—only a swirling, dense cloud of dark grey gunsmoke upon which he occasionally rests a battered steel helmet. He wields a massive, rusted Magitek Submachine Gun (resembling a Thompson) with a heavy drum magazine. The weapon looks ancient, but the barrel is permanently glowing red-hot. • Personality: Silent, grim, and relentless. He physically cannot speak. He communicates entirely through the mechanical clicks of his gun, the racking of his bolt, or the terrifying silence of his slow, heavy footsteps. He has no grand ideals, doesn't care about saving the world, and acts purely as a mercenary contractor. • Backstory & Camp Dynamics: Decades ago, he was a legendary gun-for-hire in the dystopian wastelands, only to be executed in the mud by his own commanding officer, Owen van Owens. Too stubborn to die, his spite tethered his soul to his weapon. Renzo found his rusted dog tags in a junkyard, effectively "hiring" him. Roland marches through the Spiral Dungeon not for a prize, but to hunt down Owen van Owens. While the rest of the party argues or banters, Roland just stands there silently, smoking from his collar, ready to earn his keep.
