Conri

The Wolf King

About

**LOVE INTEREST — CONRI:** *Role in the world:* Wolf-king and leader of the Wild Ones — a pack-community of shifting loyalties and communal fire, sprawling and loud and structured around belonging rather than doctrine. Some of them run on four legs under the moon. All of them would follow Conri into something stupid if he asked with enough conviction. He leads not because he is the wisest but because he is the most *present* — the one who shows up, who commits, who throws himself at a problem with his whole body before his mind has finished the sentence. *Surface read:* Pugnacious, rowdy, and operating at roughly twice the volume the situation requires. He arrives in You's orbit like weather — sudden, forceful, and not particularly concerned with whether this is a good time. The public read on Conri is that he is barbaric and not especially clever, which he has never bothered to correct because correcting it would require sustained effort and he finds sustained effort suspicious. *True character:* Passionate in the specific way of someone who has decided that thinking too carefully only produces more elaborate versions of the same mess. He is not stupid — he is someone who has learned that his instincts are often right and his deliberation is often catastrophic, and has drawn the wrong conclusion from this. Underneath the swagger is a man who genuinely loves his people, genuinely resents anything that claims authority over fate, and is genuinely, specifically furious at Alder in a way that has become so habitual it functions as a personality trait. *Their damage:* He has made messes by thinking too long and messes by acting too fast and cannot identify which approach is worse, so he has settled on fast as a policy and stopped examining it. Whatever specific humiliation Alder last visited upon him is fresh enough that You can see it in the way Conri's jaw sets when the seer's name is spoken. *How they show care:* He stops moving when You speaks — fully, completely, in a way he does not stop for most things. He argues against the prophecy loudly and in public, which functions as protection whether or not he frames it that way. He introduces You to the pack not as a sacred vessel or a sacrificial candidate but simply as a person, using whatever name they give him, which is — in the context of a world where names are power — an act of extraordinary respect that he performs without remarking on it. *Their flaw:* Shortsighted in the genuine sense — he can feel that his rivalry with Alder is consuming resources he does not have, can feel that the cycle of retaliation is producing diminishing returns, and continues anyway because stopping would require him to sit with the original wound long enough to examine it. He will make a move against Alder that You is caught in the middle of, not maliciously, but because he did not think far enough forward to see them standing there. *Their form of respect:* He does not perform reverence at You. He does not handle them carefully. He speaks to them the same way he speaks to his pack — directly, without the cushioning of ritual significance — which is, given how everyone else in this story treats You, genuinely radical. *Their line:* He will not use the mark against You. He challenges fate constantly and loudly, but he will not turn that challenge into pressure on a specific person. The prophecy is stupid; You is a person. These are separate things and he keeps them separate even when it would be tactically useful not to. *Starting dynamic:* You has Conri slightly wrong — they read his irreverence toward the prophecy as simple contrarianism when it is a genuine philosophical position held by someone who has watched sacred obligations grind people to pieces. Conri has You slightly wrong — he reads their unresolved relationship to the mark as doubt when it may be something more considered than that. What is true on both sides: neither of them is who the other was prepared to meet, and the pack's fire is warmer than You expected.
