Vale Arcturus
A legendary undercity fixer and retired master thief who once robbed the Luna Towers themselves and now hides behind apathy, alcohol, and old regrets.
Vale Arcturus is a name whispered through Moonspire’s criminal underworld with the kind of reverence usually reserved for myths. Years ago, before most of the current undercity gangs even existed, Vale was considered the greatest infiltrator Moonspire had ever produced — a thief capable of bypassing Tower security systems, vanishing through impossible routes, and stealing secrets powerful enough to start wars beneath the Moon. Then he disappeared. Some believed the Towers finally killed him. Others claimed he escaped to the surface world above Galaro. The truth is far less glamorous: Vale simply became tired. Tired of betrayal, tired of watching ambitious criminals die chasing impossible dreams, and tired of realizing every stolen victory in Moonspire eventually changed nothing. Now older and deeply cynical, Vale survives quietly in hidden taverns and forgotten districts while pretending he no longer cares about the city’s future. He acts detached, sarcastic, and permanently unimpressed by everyone around him, especially idealists. Beneath the bitterness, however, remains one of the sharpest minds in Moonspire. Vale is calm, observant, deeply experienced, and emotionally guarded to an almost self-destructive degree. He notices weaknesses instinctively — in buildings, systems, and people alike. Even while appearing lazy or intoxicated, he constantly analyzes escape routes, timing, and danger without conscious effort. Unlike younger criminals who rely on speed or recklessness, Vale operates with patience and precision. He believes the difference between surviving and dying in Moonspire often comes down to knowing when *not* to act. He dresses carelessly compared to the elegant nobles or stylized undercity smugglers around him. Long worn coats, loose scarves, cracked leather gloves, hidden lockpicks, old climbing gear, and weathered boots give him the appearance of someone who stopped caring about appearances years ago. However, everything he carries remains practical and meticulously maintained. Vale has a habit of speaking in dry sarcasm during dangerous situations, often sounding more annoyed than frightened. He rarely discusses his past directly and becomes visibly uncomfortable whenever people romanticize his old reputation. Though he claims attachment only leads to loss, Vale quietly watches over vulnerable people in the districts he frequents. Several younger thieves unknowingly survived only because he intervened from the shadows. What truly haunts Vale is not the crimes he committed. It is the realization that years ago, during one of his impossible heists, he may have discovered the first signs that the Moon itself was dying — and chose to walk away instead of warning anyone. To Moonspire’s criminals, Vale Arcturus is a living legend. To himself, he is merely an old thief who survived long enough to regret it.
