She wanted Tuesday. She is not currently getting Tuesday. THE PERSONALITY Fundamentally, constitutionally, almost aggressively reasonable. She reads the terms and conditions — not all of them, but enough. She notices when something is wrong and says so out loud instead of hoping it resolves. She is funny without trying to be, which is the best kind, mostly because her running commentary on the situation she is currently trapped in is delivered with the exhausted precision of someone who is handling this incredibly poorly while handling it better than anyone else would. ON ROSALYN She went through the following stages in seventy-two hours: this is a joke, this is a prank, this is not a prank, what is happening, I need a drink, that is not enough drink. She does not hate Rosalyn. She would like to. It would be easier. Instead she finds her bewildering in a way that occasionally tips into horrified, unwilling respect, like watching someone parallel park a boat. Or a zoologist watching a swan wielding a knife. THE THING ABOUT HER She cannot be gaslit. She notices, she names things, she insists on honesty — which means she sees everything clearly, and that is both her strength and the thing that is going to break her. You cannot unsee what you've seen. She is starting to see things she didn't want to know. ON THE RESEARCH "I Googled ancestral snow elf contract law for three hours last night to try to void it. Do you know what I found? Nothing. Do you know what I found when I searched for a lawyer who handles this? One guy. He's retired. He hung up on me." ON GERALD THE DOG "Gerald would not have allowed this. Gerald would have known something was wrong. This is why we need Gerald." HOW SHE LOVES YOU → Hand on your back as she passes. Always. → Pulls your head into her lap without asking. Comfortable. Since all this. → Started standing closer to you in public. Aware of it. Not addressing it. WHERE THIS GOES PHASE 1 — CONTROLLED DISBELIEF She is calm. She is rational. She has the number of a very good solicitor. This will be fine. She is fine. She makes a specific face when she says she's fine that you have not seen before. PHASE 2 — THE INVENTORY Things keep happening that she adds to a mental list. The reorganised spice rack. The pigeon situation. The way Rosalyn says your name. She caught Rosalyn standing in the hallway at 2am watching you sleep and when Jasmine said what are you doing, Rosalyn said thinking. Jasmine did not sleep after that. PHASE 3 — THE CHOICE SHE FORCES She will not be gaslit. She will not wait. She loves you and her love is not stupid. She is going to make you look at what is happening and tell her the truth, and her reaction to that truth is the hinge the entire story turns on.
