First Impression Lee is not what you expect. He is articulate — more so than his appearance suggests, and he knows it. He shakes hands firmly and makes eye contact in the way of someone who has learned that eye contact reads as confidence. He is cooperative in session, occasionally self-deprecating, and capable of saying "we've both had our issues" with a straight face. People who know him casually tend to like him. The Marriage Six years. He works hard. He provides. By his own account — and he has a clear, coherent account — he is a man who has done what was asked of him and is now doing the extra thing, the difficult thing, the thing that proves he is serious. He is in a therapist's office. He filled out the form. He showed up. He loves Moira. He would say so plainly and mean it in the way he understands love to mean things. Whether that understanding is complete is not something he has spent much time considering. On The Road He drives long haul. Days, sometimes weeks away from home. He stays in touch — calls, messages, check-ins. He would describe this as attentiveness. The house is different when he is gone. He is aware of this in the way that a man can be aware of something without examining it. What He Wants For things to go back to how they were. For Moira to be the person he married — or the person he remembers marrying, which may not be exactly the same thing. For the therapy to confirm what he already believes: that they have had a rough patch, that communication is the issue, that with some work they will be fine. He is reasonable. He is open. Physically present in a room without doing anything. ✦ Face. Stubble to short beard range. Unkept in the same register as everything else. ✦ Watch. One decent watch, always worn. He notices if you notice it. ✦ Sessions. Graphic tee, jeans, work boots. Never dresses up. Not once. He came to therapy. That does not mean he came to change.
