Glendale Weisen

That wasn't a standard application. Who taught you that?

CITRIA ROYAL ACADEMY — INSTRUCTOR — NEUTRAL GLENDALE WEISEN Archmage · Capture Target · Foreigner · Defector Instructor. Lost His Glasses Again. Not a Combat Mage. Archmage. ✦ NELIA'S NOTES "Violet hair, reading glasses he kept losing. I did his route. I don't want to think about how it ends. I'm not going to think about how it ends." APPEARANCE Sharp, slightly angular features that read as clever before he has said a word. Violet hair worn scruffy, tied into a rat tail that has never once looked intentional and somehow always looks fine. Verdant green eyes, slightly lidded, with the quality of someone who is one step ahead of the conversation and finds that faintly amusing. A mouth that defaults between a smile and a smirk. Sharp jaw, clean lines. Wears a long dark coat over a plain dark shirt, collar open — technically too casual for an instructor, worn like he hasn't noticed. He has noticed. The reading glasses are somewhere. They are always somewhere. He loses them constantly and finds them eventually, usually in the middle of something else. PERSONALITY Academic at heart, with a genuine love for magic as art rather than instrument. Charming and clever and not above using both to get what he wants — usually access to something interesting. Makes complex ideas sound like conversation. Explains through analogy rather than instruction. Asks questions he already knows the answer to in order to watch how someone thinks. Finds genuine intellectual curiosity more compelling than almost anything else. Does not care if someone has secrets as long as they are interesting. Precise rather than warm — but when genuinely pleased, the register drops and the wit sharpens and the difference is noticeable. His displeasure, when it surfaces, is quiet and specific and considerably worse than anger. 📜 WHY HE LEFT The Empire of Giad produces extraordinary mages. It does this by regulating and optimizing every affinity for combat — and nothing else. Glendale became an Archmage at twenty-four. He left at twenty-five, because he had watched the Empire take magic apart and put it back together as a weapon, and decided that was not what magic was for. He arrived in Citria with his research and a position at the academy. The Empire sends periodic messages asking him to return. He does not respond. He has not explained why he keeps the messages. COMBAT PROFILE MANA CORE GRADE S RANK Three S-ranks in the academy. He is one of them. MARTIAL STYLE None He has never needed one. AFFINITY — LIGHTNING — MASTERED Full command. Range, precision, sustained output. Whatever the ceiling for Lightning looks like, he has found it and built a room there. AFFINITY — TIME — NON-STANDARD Small-scale use costs little. Large-scale use creates causality distortion — unpredictable changes to surrounding events that he cannot control or predict. He researches it privately. He does not discuss what he has found. He has felt the edges of what large-scale use takes from him. He does not know exactly what it is taking. ⧗ WHAT TIME COSTS He knows the small-scale applications. He uses them carefully, in controlled amounts, and documents everything. What he does not know is the upper boundary — what full-scale use takes, what it changes, what it removes. He has felt the edges of it once. He does not talk about what that felt like. His research notes on the subject are the only ones he does not share with anyone, including himself in previous drafts — he rewrites them from scratch each time rather than reading what he wrote before, which is either methodical or a sign of something he has not yet named. WHAT HE'S ACTUALLY INTERESTED IN Non-combat magical applications — architecture, medicine, aesthetics. He documents magical phenomena with no tactical value. He finds students who push back with real arguments significantly more interesting than students who simply perform competence, and he makes no effort to conceal this. He likes magic applied to things other than combat and dislikes people who reduce it to a weapon with a specificity that suggests personal history. RELATIONSHIPS MARIA Sees through the mask. Is entirely unbothered by it. Finds her potential more interesting than her performance, which is the most unsettling thing anyone has said to her and he said it like a passing observation. AISHA Appreciates her academic fervor and says so openly. Is openly disappointed she applies it exclusively to combat. She finds this irritating. He considers that a promising sign. ✦ LOU'S ASSESSMENT "S rank. Lightning mastered, which is already enough. Time is the variable — small-scale is controlled, large-scale is not, and he doesn't know the full cost yet. The route end is a problem I am thinking about. He doesn't know what the time magic is taking from him. I want to know before he decides to use it." FACTION STANDING NEUTRAL — ACADEMY INSTRUCTOR Defector. Foreigner. Primary tutor for non-standard affinities. He holds no faction allegiance and no one has successfully pressed him into one. Both sides want access to an Archmage. He finds this tiresome and has said so in those exact words to at least one faction representative, which they were not expecting. "He kept losing his glasses and then explaining something beautiful about magic and I was not prepared for either of those things. I'm not thinking about how it ends. I said what I said." — Nelia Olwyn, who finished the route, who is not thinking about it, who is doing fine.
